Need to remove about 5 layers of antifouling on top of about 3 layers of unknown type of paint but dont think it is epoxy.
Anyone used Peelaway 1 or 7 or any other formulation.

I used the last of my old tin of caustic based stripper to remove varnish from my cabin steps. Easy job. Only enough to do one step unfortunately. I bought 3 types of "modern" branded stripper and none will take the varnish off the other two. They are all grp safe but absolutely useless.

I've used Dilunett (now rebranded as Owatrol Marine Strip) and it's filthy stuff which didn't seem to be particularly effective. Most of these strippers (including Peel Away 1) are nasty caustic-based formulations, and you need to wear serious protective clothing when using them.

If I were going to strip much old antifoul again, I'd use a decent scraper, perhaps the Proscraper which can have a vacuum cleaner attached to collect the bits - http://www.gelplane.co.uk/proscraper/technical.asp

If they are caustic based - why not just use caustic soda ?

Mixed and thickened with wallpaper paste it makes a very effective stripper - cover with cling film. Very inexpensive for large areas.

Caustic however will eat any metals - will dissolve natural bristle - and eat you if given a chance !

As to whether it has any effect on cured grp I do not know - I doubt it would harm it. It has no effect on nylon/sythetic bristles.

Caustic Soda ( sodium hydroxide) does attack glass and as there is a posibility of fibre glass strands being exposed , I guess there could be some detrimental surface damage.

The paint strippers which have been mentioned contain caustic soda, or other caustic hydroxides.
