Its had whole interior refurbed ... looks pristine .... cockpit furnishings redone as well ... gauges / pilot station serviced.

Big 260hp gasoline engine had belts / filters etc etc all done this winter.

Basically the boat is reported to have been given to yard and told to refurbish top to bottom.

So why would I not buy ??

Its the ~8m model from 1998.

Hello Refueler.

We have had a couple of Bayliner cruisers -- a 265 and a 285 -- I guess the one you are looking at might equate to the 265. If so, the 260hp petrol engine has insufficient power and the slightest amount of hull or propeller fouling will mean she will struggle to plane. Also, they are lightweight boats and badly affected by wind, so can be a bit of a handful to berth -- bow thruster is a must have.

As Simonfraser says, getting petrol for them is a bit of a pain.

Regards, Nick.

About the engine ... I have a Primor 24 at present on the river .... 24ft and factory weight 1.3 ton .. which I think is grossly understated. as that is with the factory AQ130 4 cyl engine .... it has been retrofitted with the AQ170 6 cyl ... estimates of her weight now are nearer the 1.7 - 1.8 ton mark. That 170HP pushes her to about 25kts max ..

The Bayliner is only a foot or so bigger and has 260hp ... with similar hull. As to sea-keeping ... that does not surprise me as the Primor is rated to be sea-going - but I would not like to risk being caught out. She is basically a River boat.

I had a 1994 2655 for 8 yrs with the 5.0 230hp engine. I did many happy trips on the fjords and had no triuble berthing without a bowprop. She planed easily as I had a 5 blade stainless prop which transformed it after a 3 blade. I crossed open sea to get to islands in 2m waves and it handled it fine, it helped by running with the flaps down, all in all not a bad boat for the money despite the built to a price image. I bought it at 4 yrs old for £10,000 and sold it at 12 yrs for £30,000, free boating!

I had similar experience ( profit after 2-3 years but not as big)
I had a 1990 bayliner 2651 ( renamed 2655 following year) 5L V8 230 hp
Plenty of power to spare
Took it across the channel to Paris and back to the Solent
Great boat

mmmmm you say plenty of power ... and crossed channel.

Other guys says lack of power and not so seaworthy ..

Oh Well !!

What I do not believe on a 260HP engine is the claimed 15lt / hr cruising consumption ... even my 170 can hit that sort of figure ...

I was surprised read 260hp was underpowered on an 8m boat, but then he was speaking from experience

I have read that people have changed props ... maybe that's something to do with it ...

factory lists up to 28kts on the 250hp ... but the advert is saying 260hp ... Problem over here is they talk in different units ... Z.S. etc. so maybe seller has just rounded up conversion ...

Photos I've seen appear to show her planing well ... ??

Hi Refueler,

I said "plenty" of power to spare , it wasn't just adequate , there was loads of spare power.

According to my log book
Port Solent to Le Harve took 5 hours and used 154.52 L

Its about 100nm = Average of 20 knots which was incredibly slow for the Bayliner , I was cruising in company.

You probably already know this, but also check the risers/manifolds and bellows have all been changed in the recent past. Bayliners have always struck me as nicely thought out boats, just built to a lower budget than rivals. You can always upgrade the cheap bits if you really want to.

We thought about a 2855 or 285, but would rather have a diseasel version, there were a few but they were far away (Scandinavia) and with the marinised GMC V8 ex Hummer engines.
Nice laid out boats and totally unsuitable for what we wanted needed :)

Went to look at a really early one a long time ago , warned on here about chine cracking.
It was a long drive back home.
We have a much later model on our moorings a really immaculate petrol boat, problem , finding fuel, en route and at destination.

A lot of people seem to think that because UK marinas don't often sell petrol, every marina in the world is the same. Here in Spain (and quite possibly where the OP is), petrol is available everywhere and there are lots of petrol boats, most with outdrives. The only thing that saves them from exploding is the fact that the boat has melted on contact with the water.

We had a 2755 with a 7.4L V8, on a flat day it would hit 40 knots, playing the tabs like a piano, on a lumpy day it stayed on the moorings.
Saying that we did lots of trips, the longest one was Cuxton to Eastbourne in one leg, super trip at an "economic" speed and used it most weekends, but that was when petrol was somewhat cheaper.
I will admit that when we moored up at our destination and went down into the cabin it always looked like we'd been burgled, a big pile of everything on the cabin floor.
It was our first boat, a lot of fun, did what it was supposed to and as long as you were sensible(ish) it looked after us.

I’ve owned two bayliners of that era.
Gelcoat and GRP made in quantity and high quality.
Engines from mainstream manufacturers.
Fittings and finishes made to a budget but you can see what you get.

One thing to be aware of

The hull / deck joint.

It is a weak point. It is not glassed over. It’s fitted like the lid of a biscuit tin and the joint has the rubbing strake on it. When it leaks, it leaks.

Budget for removing the rubbing strake, bonding the joint with sika and putting a new rubbing strake on.
