Re: Look who\'s got..

Hi David,

I also have a Sadler and am about to order new laminate sails. What thinks should I be thinking of? What performance difference do you notice? How bad were your existing sails. I also have a query on folding prop on the forum which I would wwelcome your thoughts if any.

regards

David

As far as I know the old sails are original and now 15 years old. The new genoa is from Kemps in cruising laminate. After much heart searching we had the new sail made to 135% as against 150% for the old No. 1 genoa. This is to allow us to carry it un-reefed until there is enough wind to change to our No.3 heavy weather genoa. Haven't tested that theory yet as we only had force 3 to 4 at the weekend. Maybe the new sail will have better shape when reefed than the old one but I think they always set better un-reefed.

I reckon our pointing angle was 3 to 5 degrees higher with the new sail at similar speeds to those achieved with the old No. 1. If we bore off to the old pointing angle we went at least 0.5 knot faster than with the old sail. All this is a bit vague at the moment as it is based on only a few hours in light winds. The boat generally felt much quicker than with the old sail though. Less heel, more acceleration in gusts and much quicker out of the tacks. All this with less sail area than we had before. Can't wait to try it in a force 5 with a reef in the main.

Hope this is of some help. Can’t help with the prop but it looks like you are getting plenty of replies there.

Regards

Dave

Re: Look who\'s got..

Thanks David,

Can I be so bold to ask a couple of more questions?

I assume your older sail and newer sail were/are roller reefed?
Can you give me a ballpark estimate of what you paid?

Yes, I am getting great advice on the folding prop ques. A search on the forum also brought up loads of info. A trip to the LBS to negotiate prices is on the cards.

Thanks Again

David

Would definately second Kemps and also agree with all you comments about the improvements in performance.

Yes they are all set on a roller reefing gear but the gear has 2 grooves and we have 2 halyards if we want to go back to the old fashioned methods for racing.

We paid £1060 for a 26 square metre sail. It is tri-radial cut with a very high standard of trim. (Dark chord lines, reef markers, leach and foot tensioning lines, etc.) This was about 10% more than the price for a good cross-cut dacron sail.

Sail makers seem to be keen to get the work at this end of the season so it is probably worth haggling but Kemps prices were pretty keen from the outset.

Regards

Dave.

Re: Look who\'s got..

I did very much the same 2 years ago and have'nt regretted it. Sometimes in light winds I wish the genoa was a bit bigger but that's rare and with the jib rolled to a small storm jib size in F8+ we've still had a reasonable shape. Again Kemps cuiser laminate tri radial .. well recommended.

Re: Look who\'s got..

Have this season renewed main and genoa on 'me ole Najjer'. what a difference! She now starts lifting her skirts at 11/12knots .... how's an old chap like me to cope?.... from 14 on she flies. I reckon I'm a knot faster and more close winded ... no, not short winded! I also put a Maxi prop on last season and with the new sails, my boat has been transformed ... thank you Sanders

Re:pointing angle

Hi Nigel

Yes I am sure all the performance increase was due to replacing the tired old sail with a new one. I expect that a good quality cross cut dacron sail would have been just as good straight out of the bag. The attraction of laminate was its professed ability to keep its shape for longer than dacron; and the cruising laminate looks and handles just like dacron. In the end the price differential was so small that I thought I might as well try it.
