Is there anyone out there in the Looe / Plymouth area who would be willing to give me the benefit of their experience? I'm a dinghy sailor and have just got a small trailer-sailor that I'd like to start taking out in a month or so. I've done Dayskipper and Coastal Skipper theory but I'm well aware that this is a miserable substitute for practical experience. It would be very reassuring to have someone more experienced on board for the first time (or so) out. Alternatively I'd be happy to come along as crew on your boat.

Ahhh, Plymouth Sound, the Tamar, Cawsand, Kingsand, Wembury, Newton Ferrers, Noss Mayo...

Lovely area. Sailed there for many years in the 70's/80's racing Sonatas, dinghies, Albin Ballad...

There are many good clubs around in Plymouth; Mayflower, Corinthian, Royal Western They'd be able to help out, but the area is very easy, just use common sense. Keep out of the way of channel based traffic (warships - not the we have any, ferries etc)

I'm busy with maintenance for a good while, but I can understand where you're coming from, I moved up from dinghies to an Achilles 24 last spring. Even though I've sailed on bigger boats a lot while I was a kid, it's still nerve wracking.. Personally I'd try starting off in the Saltash/Plymouth area if you can, as there's plenty of sheltered water and you can get in or out any time of tide. As you start to feel more brave, you can work your way up to going out past the breakwater. You shouldn't have any problems, just give anything naval a wide berth.. This is the way I've been doing it, except for the delivery trip from Poole - but then I had help..
If the boat's fairly small, you'll probably find that she behaves quite like a dinghy anyway - just with a bit more weight and less tendency to fall over...

Mosquito Sailing Club in Torpoint is very friendly. Incidently a chappie called Goss is a member there!
May even be a berth in the Ballast Pond.

clyst is a Looe man, so am I

although I don't keep my boat at Looe I only live just outside the town in Talland bay. I agree with the others put her in the Tamar at Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club (The Old ballast pond thats where my boat is) it has a very good ramp for any state of the tide for dinghies unlike Looe where you will be have to wait for high water or you will be fighting a very strong current to get out of the harbour and then have to fight it again to get back in again before the harbour dries. The TMSC has a strong dinghy membership you would get a crew in no time.

Great place to sail. I did my Day Skipper Practical @ Plymouth in 2002 and am looking forward to visiting with my Trailer Sailer later this year. I know there are plenty of good slipways, but would welcome any advice that would help me chose between them based on

1/ Somewhere secure to leave the car and trailer for 5 - 7 days (without breaking the bank)

2/ A shallow slipway with good traction for easy launch and recovery

I would be glad to join you on your fledgling sails. I'm no great expert but I have coastal skipper shore based and practical. And a number of years bare boat chartering as skipper, sailing in the Dartmouth-Isles of Scilley area on yachts up to 35ft.

I'm in the middle of buying my first boat that will be kept in Plymouth or Torpoint, be good to have a get together with any like minded souls either when all the boats are in the water or for a beer beforehand. In fact the more I think about it the idea of a beer sounds better & better......

who's up for a pint??????
