Lombardini 2204 M diesel

Hi Erik,
I read something a while back on Lombardinis, that the injectors needed all sorts of special tools to even get them off. Might be worth checking. The case was on a convertion of a small automotive unit for marine use.

Lombardini is an explodamota. Usually examples on Ebay, starting somthing like 'diesel powered generator Lombardini engine spares or repair.

Sadly the only decent small diesels, Kubota, Mitsubishi, Shibura, Yanmar are or Japanese origin.

I have the Lombardini LDW903M on my boat; it is the three-cylinder version while the 2004 is four cylinder. I have found it a very reliable engine, as is the single-cylinder on my other, smaller, boat.

Each injector has its own OHC 'pump' and it is possible to calibrate them on the boat itself using a very simple set-up. I was lent a video of this operation. These days it is very possible that you will find equivalent information on a DVD.

Everyone will almost invariably extol the merits of 'his' engine, some people even arguing that Beta is better than Nanni, is better than Kubota, etc.

After my experience with two Lombardini, I would not hesitate to install one should I get another boat.

Aluminium head and iron block so some obvious issues here in sea water, plus if fitting with the sail drive the legs often have issues with oil contamination , nice and light and a lot of race boats use them.

I had a pair of brand new ones in an old Motor Cruiser. Were like a Timex watch. Nothing to get too excited about with regards to refinement and quietness but were utterly reliable.

Not one spot of bother in the few years I owned them.
