Lockdown sailing

Well, at least someone is getting to enjoy sailing in the beautiful weather we are currently experiencing. No ‘lockdown’ non-sailing for this skipper as he throws in a few tacks to get round Ryde Sands.

I know, I know... “it’s probably a delivery skipper...” But there do seem to be an awful lot of yachts are currently in need of an urgent delivery at the moment!

extraordinary how so many Dutch yachties manage to get out sailing without overwhelming the emergency services when apparently th english cant even be trusted to drive to the marina without having an accident let alone go sailing ,,,,,, only in england

There seemed to be quite a few (as in "a dozen or so") Dutch yachts heading east up the channel this morning. I wonder if they are all coming back from somewhere together?

Sweden, 1549 deaths as of Sunday, no lockdown, social distancing in force.

I was as happy as anyone else to adhere to the guidelines initially, but some of us aren’t fortunate enough to be retired in full salary pensions. We need to start working again soon, but I fear the PM has rather lost his nerve since his recent brush with death.
That's a significant number in a population of 10 million and it's not over.

He is on his way home to Netherlands from La Gomera after lockdown blocked other options. Unscheduled solo trip by the owner of the ship. Experienced several challenges on his trip. The only thing he wants now is to arrive home safely.

Other ships can have a similar story. Don't assume they are out there for fun/leisure until you have established the facts. Maybe some of them need help.

Agree, comparing similar countries re the coronavirus Sweden has 192 deaths per million, 3 times more than Denmark at 66 per million, around 6 times more than Norway at 34 per million and around 8 times more than Finland at 27 per million
Also of note that Sweden are still seeing very large numbers of newly recorded deaths
It looks like other countries will start to relax their lockdowns in the near future and I would not be surprised to see Sweden increase their lockdown/social distancing measure

The PM is deathly quiet these days it seems. He phoned "The Orange one" 2 days ago but unable to converse with the electorate here

Italy has had 415 deaths per million and the UK has had 270. It depends just as much on when the disease took off as on how fast the doubling time is. Denmark, Norway and Finland may (may) just be lagging a bit behind.

I compared countires which were similar with a similar cultural outlook, climate, population densities etc. Denmark, Norway and Finland have seen big redictions in the daily reported death tolls. Yesteray their reported deaths were 14, 5 and 8 respectively. Sweden on the other hand had 172, more than 6 times the other 3 countries added together
It has got so bad that Finalnd is looking at closing the brder with Swedn because of the high number of casesof coronavorus there

Coastguard warning over 50 surfers in sea

BBC News Online
The coastguard is asking people to think again before going into the sea after "about 50" surfers were photographed in the water at the same time at Polzeath in north Cornwall.
Polzeath Coastguard said it was seeing "more and more people entering the water".

The coastguard said: "We would ask people to think seriously about the unintended consequences of what could happen if something went wrong while they were in the sea or at the coast."
Government guidance on exercise during the coronavirus crisis tells people to "stay local" as much as possible.

They do look a bit close, but surfing ought to count as exercise, and blowing off a bit of steam from time to time is a good thing - I expect we can keep 95% compliance going an awful lot longer, and therefore with much more effect, than 99%.

I find this type of simplistic comparisons rather pointless. Yes, the death numbers are higher in Sweden compared to neighboring countries and one major explanation seems to be that the virus unfortunately began spreading in care homes for the elderly at an early stage, mainly in the Stockholm area.
If and how this is related to the general level of distancing in society, through recommendations or regulations, lock-downs etc, is far to early to say IMHO.
There may well be other explanations behind the death tolls we see.

As you say time will tell, but I would personally rather be in a country where the deaths are falling than be in one where they are still rising, I think Sweden had a record number of deaths reported two days ago and it wasn't far off yesterday
The Swedish experiment may work, (I hope it does) but I think you will agree at the very least there is no evidence of it so far, rather the evidence is to the contrary

What about Taiwan, Singapore? They got it long before any European country and fare much better than Sweden.

What is reported on a single day does not give a good overview of the state of things and I would disagree with your general description of the situation here.
Death numbers have, if anything, slightly decreased over the last week, but the general picture (including new confirmed cases, people in intensive care etc) is that we are on a steady level.
As for evidence, I would only agree that there are none at this point in time.

This is what happens if you let the virus spreading. 10 times more infected on the streets? 10 times the chance that somehow it breaches the barrier. Doesn't Norway and Finland have care homes??
