I used to live on a narrow boat in London a few years back, although fairly briefly, I would now like to go for it again and have found what seems to be a suitable craft ready converted and even a suitable tidal/drying mooring with an easy going yard, with water and power, the boat has central heating from a solid fuel stove and as an engineer it all looks good, I will of course get a survey completed before parting with the green stuff and will have to motor the beastie round the south coast to get it to the Medway where it will live, but non of this is a concern, I have a few thousand sea miles between motor boats and sailboats and am an active sailboat racer. What I would like to know are the nuances of living this way, and what to do about mail, telephone etc.... do people bother with the council if they dont have to? Any advice greatly appreciated, I will motor the boat about occasionally as well although I prefer to sail if possible.

Just taking the plunge myself, at last, give up the house at the end of the month for a nomadic summer before setling into Milford Haven for a bit. I set up a contract with O2 (ex BT mobile) phones at £25 a month for 3 hours prepaid and reasonable rates per min if I need more, which seems about the same as I normally pay for the phone bill. Personal mail will go via the boatyad office, they have a box for liveaboards and my brother is providing an 'official' address for government etc. As he already has 2 adults in the house there are no council tax implications. I think council tax depends on if the mooring is licenced as residential, most arn't and as a transient I don't think you have to pay. let me know if you find different!

The mooring I intend to use don't register as residential and have a laid back attitude, so I wont bother with the council, I may spend part of the year in France as well depending on how things go.
