Liveaboard places south coast uk?

Hi we made it to Northern France with the idea to possibly stay and find work, and although the marina is cheap, were not 100 percent sure we will stay. Found work, but also found its easier to make a living in the uk!We are going to stay a while longer but would like to think if we did return, where can we live aboard, ideally Cornwall? Devon or maybe anywhere south coast? The down side is the expense of the uk. Were currently in a nice marina in Morlaix and is only £800 a year for 11m. Cheers!
 
I've lived aboard at a few places along the South coast between voyages and I'd say that roughly £800 is about a third of what you'll pay in a South coast marina. Some will be much more, few will be less. Swinging moorings in the Plymouth area I found to be cheaper but least expensive of all, at least in 2006, was a river pontoon berth with no electricity or water (water available via a dinghy trip) was with Carrick Council at Truro Harbour office for a pontoon berth, winter season only. on the River Fal. It wasn't for the faint hearted when it blew a bit....:D

Thanks, yes am aware its alot dearer back over there! Prefer a marina though, or at least somewhere with electric and water, dont fancy rowing for water!
 
I'm told by friends that are there that you can get away with living abouar in Brighton provided you keep your heads down. I did quite a lot of liveaboard research earlier this year and there are very few marinas that will officially accept permanent residents.

you can live aboard in brighton and eastbourne but it will cost you £3,000 a yr
rye has livaboards who pay about £1,000 a yr for your size boat.

It costs me £3000 per year on the Medway even if I only spend two days aboard each year!
 
getting some interesting replies thanks! Yes guesssed some marinas turn a blind eye to people living on board. Getting some interesting replies!There are quite a few uk registered boats here in Morlaix, guess because its so cheap to keep them here. So anyone else can think of any half decent places, cornwall sounds good to me but guess its limited! cheers
 
Last time I visited Totnes there was a sort of marine squatter living on a rather neglected yacht moored alongside the Steamer Quay. Locals claimed he had been there for years; allegedly without paying any dues.

We can get away with a lot of teleworking (IT Sales and some business analysis) , but we still have to spend time on customer sites and those tend to be in London and the South East. It's not only a question of commuting costs, it's also quality of life - OK, we could save money with an out-of-the-way marina, but we would be giving ourselves very long days every time we had to visit a customer...

Yes would like totnes, lived near there before coming to france. Cant see they would accept a liveaboarder though! May look into it though!
 
Well, if you need to get to London and the South East, you'd do far better to consider Essex or Kent than the Solent or west of that. Only some of the marinas are out of the way!

For example, I can get a train from a station 10mins walk from our Essex marina to London in only just over an hour, or could drive to the M25 in 25 mins. The rates are probably half those in the South or South West. Similar or better possibilities are in the Medway.

Define "half decent" - I've had marinas that we love being heavily criticised by other people. Do you want a very high standard marina or very nice surroundings? Often the two don't go together. We're bourgeois old softies these days and an excellent facilities block with clean showers, plenty of hot water and a good laundry counts for a lot more than picturesque views! A decent club house that serves a good meal is also worth a lot.

YMMV as they say...
 
thanks for the reply, yes everyone has there own ideal. The main thing being water and electric! And to be able to get out to sea, dont wish to be stuck in the mud, and dont want to row for water as some chap said he did!Would just like a few options then can chose!
 
Challenger Marine (near Falmouth). Lovely Cornish creek, excellent cafe/bar 100m away. Mains leccy and water on the pontoons. Carpark and chandlery. Google their website.

Brighton is very amenable to living aboard and sailing (24 hrs access, no lock). Good community of liveaboards, post and parcels get delivered to the office, good showers, launderette and 24hr Asda on site. Probably your best bet if you have to work but it's not very picturesque. When I do move I think now I'd just go where I wanted to go, pay the money and live quietly, I think most marinas have at least a few liveaboards and I'd be surprised if it turned out to be an issue...
