Planning a trip from Hythe to Eastbourne and were wondering whether Littlehampton is a sensible stop over bearing in mind we will have two small children who seem happier with shorter hops rather than long sloggs ?

Thanks

Nick

I have been to Littlehampton Marina to look at some boats, it is OK, but there are strong currents in the river leading up to it. Not that pretty quite an industrial outlook, but that wouldn't matter for a night or so. I have some pictures of the place if you want them e-mailed to you. The marina is the other side of the river to the town, so would be a cab ride with the kids or a longish walk. Arundel is up the river from there, a very pretty spot. I don't know if you would make it under the bridges, plus you have to be careful with the tide. Ring the marina and have a chat with them.

As Happy says the Marina is on west side of river, bit expensive too I thought, however I do believe there are free moorings on the town quay (east) side.
They do have a fun fair for the kids.
One point though the sand bar is very restrictive to entering & leaving which from memmory is only 1.5 to 2 hrs either side of HW. I missed this on exit and got stuck there for several hours so I'm a bit biased.

I thought that you may have been there from the course we found plotted on the charts that you so kindly gave us Clive.

Thanks

Beeb there once !

If sea is good and kids happy, I would carry on !

When entring Littlehampton it feels like you are running into a beach ! need to enter slow and keep an eye on depth sounder !

If it gets very shallow either chnge course or reverse you are off the channel which is not that deep !

Allways try those sort of approches on a rising tide so if you got it wrong you can be still away in an hour or so, but if it is a falling tide you might get the kids to walk around the boat for a bit and you can clean the bottom !

I have done that before as well !

As is best practice we rubbed it out and did our own although Clive's is most likely better even though he sat on the sand!

Littlehampton is not that bad at all. Just follow the transit in, if anything keep slightly to the east due to the set across the entrance. There is a tide a gauge on the end of the west pier or if in doubt contact the HM on 71 and he will give you a reading. The monstorius sandbar is a mere 30 cm above CD.
New visitors pontoons have been installed at Town Quay and the area is dredged to 1/2 metre below CD. Lights, electric and water will be added late August whenn the new harbour office is open. The harbour office will include showers, toilets and a visitors centre. The moorings are right next to a row of restauarants, 5 mins walk from the town and 2 mins from the beach which also has a funfair.
2/3 August Littlehampton is having its regatta with national powerboat and zapcat racing, coverd by sky, channel 5 and Meridean.
So the answer to your question is dont be put off by the bar and there is plenty to do within a few minutes walk
Any more information contact the Hm on 01903-721215 most helpful chap
