At the risk of overdoing it, I have another query, this time about the gearbox. Presently selecting reverse produces awful graunching noises and stalls the engine. The gearbox has been rebuilt with all new bearings and is so simple it would be hard to put it together incorrectly. The large nut on the output shaft has been locked up dead tight, However, I have recently heard that this nut should be use to give a 5/16" clearance between the clutch parts. This could be done by slacking off the nut but I would guess that it would introduce end float into the shaft which doesn't seem sound from an engineering point of view.
I have no manual for the box so everything has been done on guesswork and an exploded parts diagram.
Can anyone tell me if the nut should be tight or used to give the clearance as described please. Looking in the top plate I can see the parts where the clearance should be set .... if its the right thing to do
Any advice would be appreciated
regards,
