Glad they were not harmed, a close call I assume.

What bad luck to have experienced that. Even more so considering they were transiting to clear out the area for the hurricane season. Currently their electronic navigation systems, communication and navigation lights are shot and they are stuck until alternatives are sorted.

I read that there is an expectation that this years hurricane season could be intense. Still time to get sorted and underway. Hope it all works out well, but likely a stressful time.

Hurricane season set to be the most active on record

About 15 years ago I was sailing from Venice when we got stuck. Lots of thunderstorms in the north Adriatic. Sailed from there for a few years and if they occurred, we tried to relied on the radar to sail around them but that evening we were avoiding one when we got caught by another.

Lighting was striking the sea and the air was really sparky – don’t know how else to describe it. I through we had got away with it, it wasn’t as dramatic as I imagined a lighting strike would be, only to find a lot of the electronics blown. SSB radio, battery charger, VHF, GPS. On deck I found a burnt to a crisp aerial that had come down from the main mast (sailing a 60ft schooner at the time).

Got most of it repaired. The electrical engineer said that the damage was limited to the equipment’s over-voltage protection circuit (apart from the aerial obviously).
