Works to install the first of two lifting bridges on the Hamble are proceeding quite well. Those local may have noticed Network Rail undertaking prep work on the approach where the railway line crosses the A27 at Bursledon.
This will be the first lifting bridge on an electrified rail line for over 75 years, and as soon as this one is finished work on the A27 lifting bridge itself will commence. Expect much traffic chaos to ensue.
Apparently it is felt the mooring spaces at RK Marine, The Cabin, and Riverside yards are discriminating against the sailing community, who until these new bridges are finished are denied access to this area of the river.
Plans to provide access to Eastlands and new deep water anchorages and trot moorings by dredging the upper Hamble are also under discussion, but due to the width of the M27 bridge it is likely a revolving platform bridge will be more suitable for this specific crossing.
