I turn 40 on Friday and was wondering if there is anything I should know about reaching this stage of life.
Does life really begin at 40 ?
or
Do I have to admit that I am an old Git and that it is down hill from now on.

Life so far has dealt me some good hands and some poor hands, but at this moment in time I am still in the game with at least a chance of staying in there for a while longer.

Regards - Ian

Nope, you've had it, downhill from now on!

Only joking, keep on with the boating, that keeps you young, poor, but young/forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

I can speak with recent experience, was 40 in January. Yup, it's crap. All your birthday cards will say "40" in big letters. Wimmin stop speaking to you in pubs. Including the one you're married to. Colleagues start planning your succession at work. You work out how long there is left to amass the retirement pot and get scared at the answer. You have to tick the next box up for your "Age" in surveys. People you meet in queues ask what your children do for a living. Yup, it's best to lie.... :-)

My God this sounds worse than I thought. Has no one got any words of encouragement.

Think of all the things you have to look foward to. ie
Reading glasses
Reumatism
Receding hair
Mid life crisis
& of course if you work for a company.......Redundancy
Oh & by the way .......HAPPY BIRTHDAY big 50 next.

Words of encouragement

40 is just a state of mind; it's years yet before you'll be worrying about your prostate /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif. It's also a great excuse for a party.

I know some distinctly middle aged teenagers and at least one 70 year-old who is going on 17. I'd like to think that, in my mid 40s, I am still a lad at heart and I have always regarded "middle aged " as being a phrase that applies to somebody who is ten years older than me - I dare say Prince Phillip felt middle aged whenever he saw the Queen Mother.

Other than that: (1) be ruthless with the hair growing out of your ears and nostrils, (2) don't succumb to Radio 2 and (3) in the words of the famous cliche: "a man is as old as the woman he feels"............

Good luck, old man. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Only this morning my wife said to me:

"God I've gone downhill since turning 40. Look at me, I've got crow's feet and lines across my face, my breasts are sagging, I've got liver spots on my hands and my backside is spreading like margarine; I'm really depressed, say something nice to me."

So I said "At least there's nothing wrong with your eyes."

On the bright side - if you were a barrister you would have to wait another 30 years to get your first interview

Even older than you thought

Not sure if it provides any further consolation, but may I offer the wise words of the great Tom Lehrer?

When you are old and grey

Since I still appreciate you,
Let's find love while we may.
Because I know I'll hate you
When you are old and grey.

So say you love me here and now,
I'll make the most of that.
Say you love and trust me,
For I know you'll disgust me
When you're old and getting fat.

An awful debility,
A lessened utility,
A loss of mobility
Is a strong possibility.
In all probability
I'll lose my virility
And you your fertility
And desirability.
And this liability
Of total sterility
Will lead to hostility
And a sense of futility.
So let's act with agility
While we still have facility,
For we'll soon reach senility
And lose the ability.

Your teeth will start to go, dear,
Your waist will start to spread.
In twenty years or so, dear,
I'll wish that you were dead.

I'll never love you then at all
The way I do today.
So please remember,
When I leave in December,
I told you so in May.

Life is a blast! Grab it by the throat and wring the daylights out of it Ian. You dont need to impress anybody when your confidence in life is total, you will not give stuff what people, other than your nearest and dearest, think.
Yes it goes down hill as it is easier, not because it is less enjoyable. You have two things that make life very sweet. A good lady and a boat to share it with. Enjoy!

Sounds about right.
Now all I need is the good woman.
Sorry only joking darling, what do you mean I'm not getting my present it was a joke honest.

'Between 40 and 50 are the golden years of opportunity, understanding and self discovery. Take from and put into each day as much as possible and avoid putting off till tomorrow. Let your growing wisdom and experience of life, things and people lead you to a different level than any you have been at before and you will become enriched in all areas of your life.' My dad said this to me when I was about your age. I took it to heart and it definitely worked for me and still does. Roy

<hr width=100% size=1>What does this mean then?

Re: Words of encouragement

given the assumption that at 40 yuou will suffer a mid life crisis; you just may experience a 'kinda understanding'' from your partner.....on the other hand you may get issued with a dog collar everytime you go out !
