Use a silicon made for this: DOW 795. Nothing else come close and it is probably what the factory used. Sika 295 urethane requires primer. I've used both and prefer DOW 795.

That is interesting. I just e-mailed DOW who recommended Dow 791 for this application. Wonder what the difference is?

Great thread as have to do this with a Gebo.....

Can anyone recommend suppliers of the perspective/acrylic/plycarbonate (which should it be?) Other than the dedicated marine ones like Eagle who are excellent but I can't afford their prices and there must be other suppliers of what is after all a widely used plastic?

I just bought two pieces of 10mm acrylic for my two hatches from simplyplastics.com in Essex they cut to my sizes and cut the radiused corners so all i had to do was drill and slot for the catches and stays. Total was £36 (i could collect so no postage)

Acrylic is best (perspex is a brand of acrylic )

Interesting. I did something very similar recently and Dow recommended 895 which is used for structural glazing. It's the EU equivalent of their 795 which I found mentioned on a website somewhere about re-glazing a hatch.

Is polycarbonate stronger than acrylic......that's what websites seem to say? In a hatch situation they need to withstand waave impacts and also weight of crew walking on them? Do acrylic and polycarbonate both stand up to this?

Yes, polycarbonate is stronger and more impact resistant but more likely to discolour over time due to UV light. As fas as i am aware, all commercial hatches are acrylic. It is just a case of specifying the correct thickness. If you replace an acrylic horizontal hatch with polycarbonate it will still have to be the same thickness otherwise water will pool in it unless you build it up.
