<span style="color:blue"> Hi Gurus,

During a crossing last week, the sheave of a Foot Block (I thought that they were called Turning Blocks) which feeds a genoa sheet to the main winch at the correct angle broke into 3 pieces.
It was 20 years old and had done 5 Atlantic crossings, so it did not owe me anything.

I have a major problem in replacing/repairing the block. Its cheeks are metal and there is a Stainless Pin holding the 'axle' for the sheeve whic is also stainless, I believe.

The nuts to which the block is bolted are, together with a backing plate, glassed into the hull and I therefore badly need to use the same holes if possible.
I have identified it as a Lewmar 19831400 No 3 with Delrin sheave. I am told that it is no longer supplied by Lewmar.

Is there anybody who stocks old Lewmar blocks?

Is it possible to have a Delrin Sheave made?
If so, how do I remove the stainless pin holding the axle which seems to be a stainless pipe, held between the cheeks by the stainless pin that passes through it?

Any advice or guidance from you Gurus would be very welcome.

Brendan

I believe from memory that the axel pin is fitted from the back of the block, which means removing the block from the boat. Shame that it is glassed in.

Hi Chris,
I think that my brain is dying.

I typed you a response to the effect that I had removed the block but could not separate the pin or the axle, despite WD40 and some gentle persuasion (hammer). Any ideas?

Is Delrin available and is it practical to try to get somebody to machine it?

I'd tend to go for the replacement sheave option, It would be a simple matter for a machine shop or even a wood turner to produce a new sheave from Tuffnol or Delrin. As an alternative, I have a pair of turning blocks that have never been used. If you tell me the spacing of the bolts I'll see if they fit. (measure the distance between centres of the holes).
