I'm hoping to get in touch with someone who keeps their boat in Levkas, for information on how practical it is as a long term base. Plan is to buy a boat in the area next year and keep it there for use in the spring and autumn mostly (back to the UK for summer!) I've chartered around most of the med. over the past few years, including out of nidri about 7 years ago, so i'm sure its changed a lot. Yacht probably about 35ft, 2 on board. Other recommendations are most welcome, but I do like the Ionian (hassle free!?). Info on berthing charges, airports, transfers most welcome. Thanks .

Hope you'll get replies from forumites at Levkas (we wintered there four years ago, but our usage pattern is quite different from your proposals). Another option worth considering is to store it ashore in one of the Preveza yards, which quite a few people in your circumstances do. I think, although you'd need to check this, that some annual contracts include two lifts each way.

Hi
Not sure about your Hassle free bit , most move away come July and Aug as it get rather packed with Italians let alone the amount of charter around these days .
to answer some of your question , I sure you get a berth in the Marina , altho Sunsail have take quite a lot of the empty berth ,
Flights after Oct and before May you have to travel to Athen to fly , 5.5 hour bus ride then another hour to the Airport from the bus station .
Folks In lefkes have a Facebook page and if you ask a question on the page you should get some good info , re berthing fees email the Marina , there good at replying .

As already suggested probably no need for a marina berth for that pattern of usage as when you use the boat, expect you will be on the move most of the time. So storage ashore and launching when you need. You can either do that yourself or you can get somebody local to do it for you so the boat is ready when you arrive.

This is what we did, but in Corfu, although getting storage ashore there is a bit more difficult than in Preveza. However, Corfu is much easier to get to with daily flights from end April to October and a short taxi ride to Gouvia. Obviously not so many nearby islands as in the southern Ionian, but if you are going for a few weeks at a time you have plenty of time to go south if you want.

There Corfu yacht yard right next door to the port , I use to keep a yacht there some 15 years ago , no pontoon he just launch you as and when you ask , by the way it's a sledge , or it was in them days and I guess it still is last time I looked ,

Yes. That is where I kept my boat for the last two years we were there. However, it was full most of the time. Otherwise if you can get in was a good place.

Preveza seems to have flights April to October/early November these days, so storing ashore there might be an easier option than Lefkas. Cleopatra will launch and put the boat on their pontoons for you to arrive and sail off. Aktio and Ionion will also launch to order, if you book ahead but as they don't have any real berthing space, it's arrive and launch rather than arrive to find boat in the water.
Preveza to Lefkas is either a fairly expensive taxi ride or catch the bus if your flight timings match.

There's also the option of Gardianage (sp) for whilst you're back in the uk. I did it last year as it worked out quite a bit cheaper and saved time launching and hauling.

Could equally mean the boat is out of the water, but is launched and prepared before you arrive. That is the arrangement I had so no time wasted waiting for launch and could board straight away.

You've confused me Vic. Why would the boat be left at anchor?

Richard

There are places in Greece where the boats are left at anchor and some one come out every day to check then or should I say ( should come out every day ) three places that come to mind are Nirdi , Vliho and Lefkas town wall To go one stage further , there are pontoon which just jet out from the quay where you lie to your anchor , Nidri marine is one and the old Nelison pontoon in both cases friend have been told if there boats are left there under Guardeniage there would not be covered .

I suppose 'Guardeniage' can mean a variety of things, but in Greece it's often care for a boat afloat, including at anchor. Hence Thedreamoneday's reference to "saved time launching and hauling".

As Tranona says, I assumed that meant launched and then tied-up alongside or stern-to on fixed mooring in the normal marina way.

Perhaps TDOD will clarify.

Many thanks to all for the info so far, a few options i'd not thought about. To clarify, I will be leaving the boat there all year, and use it mostly spring and autumn, I know how hot and busy it is there july/august! Probably haul out over winter? Gouvia sounds interesting as well. Any restrictions on working on the boat in levkas/gouvia? (i'm the typical pbo)

So far there no problem with working on your own boat in Levkas don't worry what been said here some weeks back , not sure about Gouvia , but you can't live on the boat while on the hard .
