The gun at the front with the cover over it is a water monitor for dealing with fires I think you will find.

Well done for responding and indeed for maintaining a radio watch, some dont, lets hope that those that dont dont need their dsc radio function in a hurry.

The hearing of a Lat and Long is great if your in front of the radio at the chart table when the message is transmitted, my intention would be to also give a brief verbal location in the mayday so anyone who was nearby would know they were nearby.

The covered ‘gun’ is indeed a water monitor. I’m sure that it is a suggestive vision though!

Absolutely spot on, whoever designed these cutters foresaw a home secretary like our current one and armed them with large hose pipes ?

I maybe wrong but I heard that you only need a YM to skipper one but never going to happen as the wait list is around the world and maybe only internal.

I witnessed an incident with one in Southampton but not going to embarrass them

"What three words" would be vastly better than Lat and Long if a plotter could accept it.

In Scotland and presumably elsewhere it is used by Rescuees, Rescuers, Lifeboats and Helicopters. They all seem to have the App. Makes it easy for the non nautical public that frequently get stranded on a local Island as the tide comes in.

Just put the three words received into the app in your phone and it shows the way. As it is using squares of about 3 metres then you can always pick a better choice of words for a neighbouring square.

Don't need a plotter as it displays on the device with the App

1. First rule of first aid is dont rush in and become the second casualty
Esp if CG etc are about to turn up in something big

2. Yes I thought thats what DSC was for, maybe they didn't have it

3. I'd have thought " 2 miles southwest of X" more illustrative, or a degree bearing, with direction of travel. They might have moved by time you arrive

4. VHF dead zone? Ideal then for a waiting support vessel to be just outside acting as relay station

Just my thoughts, pleased everyone tries and that the end result is good

Agree with all of the above.

I always tell my wife that if she needs to make a Mayday call then just say we're in a motorboat heading to Ibiza from Altea and set off an hour ago.
