leg of pork

Hmmmm...... thought you couldn't but you can! Went to this site http://importdetails.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Location=None&Module=IDDSearch which has a very useful search facitilty that lets you put in all the details (coutnry, product etc) and then give you the restrictions. For pork products from Spain, there are no restrictions. Pack the pork well though so as to avoid contaminating other peeples luggage with blood seeping from meat. Enjoy.

Taste it, its dry sweet cured and really nice, also at this time of year they come with calving stands. Lasts for ages and great served with cheeses ,pickled onions and salad. And a glass of wine.

Can you bring a leg of pork to the uk via plane hold luggage? (from Spain)

Go to a friendly local Spanish charcutero and ask him to carve it for you and vacuum pack the meat in 100 or 200 gram packages. Easier to carry (leave the bones in Spain!!!) and easier to serve and conserve when back in the UK. Any ham we get around Christmas (there's always one or more) is handled that way, and the small accumulated stock usually lasts well into summer.

Next weekend we will kill my brother-in-law's pig, all 180 kg of him, and then process the carcass in the traditional local rural way -- hang up to dry, innards etc to make black puddings (rice + leeks as filling), excess meat and fat, offcuts, etc go to make chorizo (sausages), and two hind hams will be hung up to cure in the smoke of an open-hearth fire. A lot of work, but the product is worth it.

Plomong

PS: the beast weighs around 220 kg alive, so should net above 180 kg.

I suspect he's importing a dried ham - quite easily the best in Europe comes from the Picos in N Spain.
There's a shop in la Coruna, specialises in hams - either to eat on the premises or to take away - some are €120/kg and all are cut by hand.
