hi --has anyone got any experience of using led strip lights ----the ones the that have multiple small leds set into flat tape---regards and happy new year----lenten

I've used ones like this quite successfully. Under shelves. in cupboards and cubbyholes etc..

I use a white led strip light mid mast position as a motoring light. It is sealed, cheap, bright, low power and can bent to any shape.

i bought some similar to fit in my engine bay. They are quite bright, but i havent got around to fitting them (yet?). My worry is the sticky tape wont work in a warm engine bay. Another disappointment is that you cant do tight bends on flat surfaces, as the bend causes a twist and it becomes unstuck.....

I had red neon cathode tubes concealed in my sidepockets to illuminate them and blue under the side decks as concealed deck lighting:

But these very fragile and required a step up transformer for each one. Used negligable power though.

Changed to 12v LED strips in the same colours and locations, 12v waterproof and encased in plastic tubes:

The ones in the pic are purple but deep blue and lots of other colours can be had.

Again power consumption negligeable but the neons gave a warmer light. LED lights immediately whereas the neons need to warm up slowly.

Look for chav car underfloor lighting for the waterproof versions.

I've just put some £11 Ikea ones over my work bench.
Not waterproof, but could perhaps be made so.
They are 12V.
They do the job OK.

I'm very happy with the adhesive strip ones that I bought on Ebay.

Look for the ones with 5050 LEDs that seem to be brighter. Some strips have a transparent covering over the surface, makes it very difficult to solder to the pads when you cut to lemgth.

my 'ceiling' lights had small halogen bulbs in, the pin orientation made it impossible to fit ready made disc LED bulbs. So I fitted 4 strips cut to 50mm lenghts and stuck them to the reflector, work beautifully.

Also stuck a 250mm strip of red LEDs in place of a fitting that had a small halogen at each end.

You can get various colours, for white I much prefer the warm white versions.

The strips just use a resistor to feed the LEDs but I've not noticed any significant brightness variation as the battery volts go up and down

I think that Maplin price is per 5cm, cut to length. Makes a 5m strip very very expensive, if you buy elsewhere, at a sensible price, you can cut the 5m strip down into whatever you want.

Maplin leds

I am very pleased with the led strips bought from maplin. I have them concealed running the length of the saloon from chart table forward. I chose the remote control dimmable multicoloured ones. And yes it is quite amusing when people come on board for a drink to set the disco sequence going!
However more importantly it allows you to choose between different colours or simply dimmed white at night, following on from the recent discussion as to which is best for night vision. My choice definately dimmed white. I also have ikea strips in the forward cabin and over the galley, controlled by led dimmers easily obtained from ebay. Not only a pleasant light, but very low on power too!
Total result.

hi karenza---how much strip lighting have you got in your saloon and are they enough on their own or do you need supplementary lighting-----i need to light a shepherds hut ---size 6 feet x6 feet x 12 feet using a 12v battery and solar power-----thanks lenten

I have three maplin lengths (one kit) on one side and one ikea strip over the galley. Suitable for task lighting when cooking and reading when sat in the saloon. And obviously good over chart table. Too many shadows to search for a lost screw on the floor or rummage in a cupboard.
