Had a lovely quiet night in Pyefleet last night, very peaceful even though there must have been a dozen yachts at anchor there.

The boat nearest us (a 30 odd foot deck saloon yacht, looked like one of the Sirius range) lowered his anchor ball at dusk and hoisted what was the brightest LED anchor light I'd ever seen. It shone like the moon! Very impressed.

I said to myself 'when we go tomorrow, I'll ask him what make it was', but unfortunately he left before I was up, at 06.00 - probably wanted to get the full flood to somewhere. I was vaguely aware of the sound of an anchor chain coming up, and it must have been his. I didn't see the name on the boat.

Anyone any idea which LED anchor light this can have been, that's so bright? I knew it was an LED as it had that strange 'harsh' look LEDs have, and a conventional bulb that bright would have flatten any battery

I think Alshira was in Pyefleet last night, she's a Sirius..... I'm sure Ali will let you know ....

IT was indeed Alshira - a Sirius 310 deck saloon, on her way back from4 months away - we got to Oslo!

The light is a "Super bright 12 LED power lantern" sold by Coopers of Stortford for £9.99 (and another one free ) and powered by 4 D size batteries - they last for many nights at anchor.

I've just used my cheap Aldi LED lamp this week whilst at anchor - it was excellent and still bright when taken down in the morning. Runs off AA batteries.

CouId it have been one of these? I have one and can recommend it.

I have one of those, and am very happy with it. Not excessively bright, but bright enough.

In fact I have two. the other one being the previous, non-LED version. The first one stopped working - it would just blink periodically and not stay on, but I'd previously been so pleased with it I bought a new one, by which time they were LED . Then I realised that the light sensor (that checks to see whether it's light outside, and therfore the lamp doesn't need to be on) in the 'broken' one had somehow become bent over (perhaps it had been dropped), so it was seeing the lamp's own light. I opened it up and re-orientated the sensor and it's been fine since. I sometimes use the old one as it has a nicer, softer, more yellowish light, more in keeping with the spirit of Maurice Griffiths when lying in East Coast anchorages I like to think!:)

I anchored in Studland 2 years ago and watched a boat come in during the dark to drop his hook. The next morning on leaving he motored close by to ask what my anchor light was as it was "by far the brightest".

It is an Nasa Supernova which I hoist on a spare halyard ......

There doesn't ( from the photo on the web reference given) seem to be a hanging loop. How is it hoisted please? Thanks!
