Leaving boat in water without antifoul

I presume that was your 'after lockdown' post that I was going to reply to. My boat was in the water during lockdown and wasn't taken out until June. That is not very long, I know, and I wasn't concerned about the bottom, but I was worried about the saildrive anodes, which are often well gone even with a spring lift-out. In the event they weren't too bad, and my later use of Trilux on the prop seems to have reduced their wear quite a lot.

It’s not time that leaves a boat like that it’s lack of use. Mine after 2.5 years had a few barnacles and some light weed on the waterline but otherwise pretty clean and I never scrubbed it in that time. My previous boat did 5 years in the water and similar results.

We are a bit further north than NZ - but after 6 months here you need a tow - because the prop is so fouled. Unless you know someone the tow will cost.

Invest the money in AF - that is what both the money and AF are for.

The idea that NZ being colder is better.....supermarkets here sell NZ mussels (not Australian mussels). There might be a message there.

The idea of not being able to keep on the hard is ludicrous. Maybe not close by - but many yachts are kept on the hard , its the old saying, location, location, location and ..... money. Sydney is a difficult location to find a place on the hard - sail 70nm north and its common place.

The idea of leaving my boat on a mooring whilst I was the otherside of the world would fill me with dread. If there's someone he trusts to keep an eye on it (deal with any chaffed mooring lines, check for water intake etc) could they be engaged (for money or beer!) to take it somewhere, git it lifted and pressure washed after 2-3 months?

Left my boat afloat in NZ (at Whangerai) for 6 months, and before that it hadn't been antifouled for two years previous. It had been all but impossible to do in California because of all the environmental constraints.

Can't say it was particularly bad afterwards, nothing that going around with the dinghy and a long brush couldn't keep under control. Possibly the water is brackish there.

Incidentally, the underwater inspection when you arrive in NZ is something else. For anyone doing this - best to make sure the hull is pretty clean beforehand.
