Look for high air pressure, it pushes down the sea level, therefore the remaining water in the rivers is fresher.
Here on the Norfolk broads 19 miles inland, it varies from 100% fresh , high air pressure, westerly or southern wind.
Or immediately after that, if we get a sudden switch to low air pressure, northerly or easterly wind, we can get 100% salt water.
