Learning about the Solent (again)

Some may know that I recently bought a Botnia Targa 27.2 to be based in the Solent area. Having been in the West Country with my S/Y for several years and laterly in the Med for the past 7 years, my knowledge of new radio protocols in the solent, protected areas (eelgrass etc), VTS and good stops/pubs etc is somewhat out of date. Short of trawling through every chart, pilot book etc, is there any central reference work that I can read up on the changes that have happened in the last umpty-um years? Thanks for advice, Alan

That’s a big question but I’m sure there will be plenty of help come along .
You bought the one with the later D3 220s ?
 
Thanks volvopaul. No, this is a new boat with the D6-440. By the way, any idea of scheduled maintenance costs for this engine?

just ordered the Reeds Channel almanac - completely forgot about it, having just used pilot books in (virtually) non-tidal Med for the past several years. Hopefully has all I need there.

Just check out where the best fuel berths are for commercial stuff, most marina's will not have been selling much recently, so quality may be unknown.

Pete you can have it done under EU law by car registered company using genuine parts . However we all know how slippery both Volvo and the dealers can be with warranty.
ive had to pay out for an alternator that was 2 weeks out of warranty, simply not worth the argument.
 
Be very mindful of the the rules in Portsmouth Harbour The new small boat Channel and distance from warships. Sign up with QHM Portsmouth for all information.
 
The various port Local Notices to Mariners can be gold dust. Most contain some sort of broad information to leisure users. Southampton; Portsmouth; Cowes; chichester, Beaulieu etc are all well worth going through carefully. And again immediately before each port visit. They are published for your benefit. Unlike books they are amended regularly. Check them out on the websites. You should also be able to see them at Marina Offices
 
Similar position to the OP too. Just taken delivery of a Targa 32 in the solent and doing the usual spots. Had some good trips to place sin Christchurch, Chichester, poole, Portsmouth, the Southampton rivers, newton, etc etc

Most approaches are detailed in the almanac - coupled with paper charts etc its been quite good fun visiting the south coast again

May be a few months before back out though !!!
