Leaking Exhaust Risers

It is not a complicated job to check any raw sea water risers,just a blurry awkward fiddly job.Normally involves problems getting at assorted bolts that will be well hidden inside the castings and trying to get your sockets/spanners underneath decks and coamings to release the perishers.Once you get them off,if the risers are sound ,it is really just a case of being inventive with various wire brushes and bits of steel rod to gouge out assorted kack in the waterways.Apply lashings of grease to everything on reassembly, you are certain to have to do it again at some point.

They are not raw water risers so won't (shouldn't) be subjected to salt corrosion etc - look at the picture........

It's got a closed water cooling system. Header tank going into the risers.

I have read this thread with most interest as I was in a similar situation to yourself.

I bought a boat that had come from Windermere, 5 years old with only 48 hours on the engine, but no service history. Being an ex boat outfitter involved in grp moulds and fitting out boats up to 70ft I knew there were no problems with the hull etc. However, not being mechanically minded, I did get a survey on the engine.

Unfortunately for me, the survey on the engine was lost in the post but I was so keen and desperate to get this boat, that I went ahead with the purchase.

Big Mistake ….

Although I had a verbal summery over the phone from the surveyor about the contents of his report, I had nothing to show the yacht broker, and this cost me £1700 in the first week of ownership.

Once I purchased the boat, and had it moored at the marina, I received the surveyors report. In the report he recommended that, the stern drive should be fully serviced, anodes, bellows should be replaced prior to purchase, and that the engine and drive be serviced with a caveat in the agreement for any problems that may arise in the future.

Moral of this story …… no matter how keen and desperate you are to acquire your new boat …. Wait until you have read your surveyors report and act on his recommendations …. You are paying for expert advice …. So feckin well take it. If I had waited … I would have been £1700 richer.

Finally …………. Please, please, please, act on the recommendations from your surveyor

"Your" engine has caught my attention, so I did some digging. I came up with this - Marine Power . I may have missed it earlier on in your other post, but what boat is it your considering? It strikes me that this boat may have been a grey import - does it carry a CE mark?

Oh and it does have a closed/freashwater cooling system.

Ah so.......very rare indeed.Did actually see another closed water system on petrol boat up on the Thames,it was a Princess 33 with twin Volvo 145 petrols.Took me ages to work out what all the extra bits were for.

Thanks to all who responded and provided advice on this thread.

Following advice received on this forum, Volvo service engineers and the surveyors report I have walked away from the deal.

A few hundred pounds out of pocket but I know it could have been a lot worse and I am a lot wiser from my experience over the past week.

The non-standard arrangement of the engine, the fact that it was not as specified i.e. Mercruiser and the exhaust riser and starter problems were too high a risk to have to take on my first boat.

What also had an influence was when SWMBO was stood next to me as the Volvo Engineer tore into the engine and mentioned the potential thousands of pounds outlay over the coming months. From the corner of my eye I could see my dream fading fast. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The boat you need is out there somewhere,it is just a case of finding it.Stuff turns up in the most odd places just keep looking and something will turn up and at the right price,just look around the forum at all the chaps with boats,you will find yours.Winter is best time to go boat hunting a nice cold overcast day pref. with a bit of ice or slush on the boat cover works wonders on sellers./forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
