Explanation/translation for ordinary people

1. Northernwave is a skipper on these boats. He's the boss, Master under God.

2. Technically, though, regardless of the language you choose, he is malheureusement, not exactemente the Ubermeister of the boat, per se.

3. This is becos it's not actually his boat like what when anyone else calls "my car" or "my house" or indeed "my boat". Cos he didn't actually buy the boat, see.

4. But, since when you hire a skipper, the skipper unlocks the boat and locks it again about 20x or 50x more often than the person who paid for the boat, it really feels as though it's his boat, and the owner is just a regular visitor. Or even not a very regular visitor. Often, the skipper is a pain in the arse, poking his nose in, knows sod all and just doesn't really goes into what keeping a boat running as smooth as clockwork. Perhaps like if you bought a pub and installed a manager, and then gave up drinking. You might even get banned from your own pub, possibly.

5. The feeling of ownership by the skipper is strong. Note how NW even list the boat as "his" in his bio. It's "his" boat. Which is a tiny bit weird. I mean, lots of us have been on ferries, but never described it on our bio as "350 foot flybridge based in Dover" really. Perhaps cos we don't drive it, or just don't make the trip every day, or simply cos we aren't the skipper.

6. Try hiring a skipper yourself. Or indeed, any crew at all. Pretty soon you'll understand the NW effect. Not only is the boat referred to as "my boat" but the owner is referred to as "my owner"! It is pretty weird being introduced as such, and feels as though you are at Crufts in a very special section - "Woof Woof! This is my owner! I'm a talking dog!"

Yup. when our crewgirl left this October, to spend winter in NZ, and she had to hand the boat over to its winter minder, she said leaving our (her?) boat was "like giving up a baby for adoption".

Re: Explanation/translation for ordinary people

I was more alarmed by stumbling across the pics that show several middle-aged types at some kind of BDSM orgy. Please post a warning to my libido in future. . . /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

...and the worst bit is when you have to enter the 'real World ' again, made far worse when you become 'The Owner' of a far more modest vessel - and you can't have what you used to have (unless you have been very clever).

Can't say I've ever missed the capital of S.America or Snort Liquordale though. Is The Raw Bar still there? It was quite the in yachtie spot in the 70s/80s.

Re: Explanation/translation for ordinary people

I won't miss lauderdale when I leave in 3 weeks.

Absolutely spot on........ It is my boat and my owner but the owner is normally the pain in the arse that hasn't got a clue what he/she is doing. Some of them are fine and don't even pretend to know and let us get on with it. Others maybe read an article once about how to anchor and suddenly feel they can tell the Captain/skipper (captain-qualified, skipper-wannabe captain) how he should be anchoring.

I do hear of these stories where the skipper is a pain in the a#@e and doesn't do a thing but as yet I haven't met any. Although I stopped working when my pay was 6 weeks late and the owners only reasoning was he kept forgetting. Justifyable!!
