Laser death roll

Jimi, will you describe a death roll, have probably done it and would like to identify when /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"blocking out" ... on a laser going upwind you basically pull the main sheet in until it won't pull no more - because the blocks hit each other ... (at the stern - if they hit each other in the middle you've bust the boom or the deck!!)

Death roll as experienced ...

Dead downwind, boat starts rolling , I move to correct and with one fell roll boom hits water, I'm in the air and the boat is upside down. I usually sheet a bit in, and put a bit of board down, but get caught out time and time again in the gusts.

Agreed - same technique can be made to work in OKs in my experience though it requires a great deal of nerve & preferably a canoeing helmet for when it all goes pear shaped and the wind gets behind the sail... ouch!

Shift yer arse sooner ye fat wee piggy, grab yer sheet and take charge - sitting there wussing around till the last minute

Put the board down more, use the rudder to roll the boat, main out beyond 90 degrees, sit out to windward and well back.

When the wind is lighter you can gybe a laser standing up by standing on the balls of your feet on the transom, traveller over your toes, steering with your heels against the top of the rudder. Lean forwards slightly and your knees will be missed by the boom......

Just keep the board down a bit, leave all the fancy bits to the guys under 30.

I used to sail Merlin Rockets and they would do the same, bit of board down gave enough damping so you could catch up with the 'rate of roll' and get yer bum in the right place.

I expect you could also do a half-pike forward roll over the boom as it comes across but for we gentlemen of mature years (sorry jimi) it's all we can do to get under the boom with the mainsheet slack /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Obviously you've never seen what Jimi calls his knees
