can someone help?! I've got an old tatty Laser which I love to bits, and have decided to do some work on this winter. I have never done anything like this before, but am determined to do it all myself. First task, is that the centreboard needs sanding down and re-painting. Can anyone who has done this kind of thing give me any tips, paint to use etc etc?

Hi Laserlady

Give the centreboard a good rub down with A fairly rough sand paper (240 or 120 grit, the lower the number the rougher the paper) if it's in a poor condition, fill any chips with epoxy filler and sand them down smooth also, then go on to wet and dry paper and rub down wet, starting with about 360 grit, then 600, then 800 and finaly 1000 grit. then paint with Perfection 709 available at most chandlers, see it on http:// http://www.marinestore.co.uk/thestore/prods/YNS936-750.html apply the paint an thin coats and brush it out well, finish of brushing in one direction, ie up and down. it takes a lot of time and patience to do a good job but it's worth it,

Hi Lasetlady,

Here's a thing to check if you don't already know about it. Laser masts rotate as you know and any sand in the mask step hole will gradually grind away the bottom of the hole and bottomof the mast. Check on the condition and pour in a plug of resin to make up the loss if required. It'll only be small but can cause a big problem in older boats if not treated.

as a fellow owner of a very elderley and tatty laser which I thoroughly enjoy racing every winter when our cruiser is laid up I question whether there is much point in painting your dagger board-my laser is bashed on the gunwhales on each side (mainly before I bought it ) but last weekend I gave it it's annual scrub with kitchen floor cleaner -took all the ropes off to wash and now it's ready for the coming winter series, have fun.

Actually a good tip is to capsize it and lose it, Newton Crum are excellent at replacing things. I lost my rudder last year when I capsized and got rammed by a silly old berk in a solo when hauling myself upright. Newton Crum had the replacement to me within the week.
