Laptop navigation software

For GPS I recently bought a uBlox USB gps dongle for 7 dollars from eBay.
I've used several of those.
And friends have too.
On Windows 10, it is just "Plug and Play"
On Windows 7, you need to fiddle with drivers to get it going but it does work.
As far as GPS reception goes, it is as good a receiver as any.
Just plug it into a laptop, add some navigation software and you have a separate plotter.
I use OpenCPN and charts that I've made myself.

That said, I'm not a great fan of Windows these days - too dependant on upgrading itself - just when you least want it.
A few years ago, I switched all my systems to Linux.
Servers, Home desktops, Media Centres etc - and the boat's PC - are all now running Linux.
It is fast and brings a new lease of life to old PCs.
Since upgrading the boat's dedicated PC to Linux a couple of years ago, it has been stable and reliable at sea and whenever I'm on the boat.
BTW - OpenCPN is multi platform - runs under Windoze, MAC and Linux as well as having versions that run under Android.
