Re: XP reliable!!!

Maybe - but I can only tell it like it is.

None of our clients would dream of running an unsupported OS (they would fail due diligence checks), so that rules out NT3,4, W3.11,95.98 and I believe ME.

I accept that none of our machines is more than 4 years old, and as such we may have been better placed than some to upgrade - but if we hadnt I'd have simply bought new machines, as the cost of unscheduled stoppages of the old OSes is far higher than the cost of replacement.

For portables with adequately new BIOSes there is really no contest - XP is just so much better.

Re: XP reliable!!!

How can you get there? I bought my HP laptop 18 months ago with Win Me installed. It came with an XP upgrade voucher and, in due course, the XP upgrade disk arrived along with an HP support disk that contained XP drivers and applications to replace those on the original installation. The upgrade appeared to go to plan but I was disappointed with some aspects of the new system e.g. I had problems with CD burning and volume control amongst other irritations. Since then I have re-formatted my hard drive and performed a 'clean' install of XP. Wow! The difference is outstanding. However, be warned, it took me a lot of planning and three full days to do it, but it is well worth the effort.

P.S. If you too have an upgrade disk you can use it to perform a clean install. It asks you to pop in the CD of a qualifying product (Win 98 or above if you have the cheaper version of the upgrade) to prove that you own it.

Re: XP reliable!!!

I'd go with that...the only thing I know about comps is that they have buttons and a screen.....but xp pro is much much more stable then w98......just can not now remember the last full 'crash' when i needed to reboot.....with w98 it seemed to be all the time.......sure a few probs with drivers etc for periperals but once past that .....

I\'d sack anyone that ...

.... boy Bill Gates has a lot to answer for.

I grew up with DOS, went through Win 2.0, 3.0, 3.11, 95 ..... to XP, XP pro ..... and my honest opinion is the later versions all suck ! I have more crashes with Me and XP and 2000 than EVER with any other Ops system. I ried an experiment the other month ..... returned an inspectors notebook to flat old 95. That way I could then re-use my HP Scanjet - which has NO support in any package after 98 version 1. You know something - that inspector has thanked me so many times .... he can go on job, switch on and the machine works without crashes. Previously he had 98se ...... what a heap of c..p !!! I have Me on the machine I am using now ..... what a bigger heap of c..p. MY Commercial director runs XP ...... he wants to kill me for giving him a machine with it on !!!!!!

NO Bill - go back to school and actually learn how to program instead of buying / paying others to provide buggy / unprepared systems ........ for US to tear our hair out with !!!!

A totally unbiased and fair appraisal of Windows today !
