Going to France, not to cruise up a river or canal, but just visit a coastal port or two. What paperwork should we take? Anyone got any hot tips that have helped them out of trouble?

the poxy dateslip ensured that this shot down the list very quickly, and the failure of the red blobs almost allowed it tobe missed completely.

So, you just need all ther normal papers - registry, insurance, passport. You should have vhf licence and operators licence too tho these don't seem to mean much to them. Customs people like to see an invoice which seems to "prove" that VAT has been paid.

However, I went to cherbourg with all this stuff and they laughed and told me it wasn't necessary. So, the main thing I needed was a Michelin restaurant guide.

Oh, and note that French time, nothing at all happens between 1 and 2, and everyone official will be gone by 8 pm at the latest. So don't bother calling vhf marinas except 8-1 in mornings and 2-8 afternoons. OUtside these hours you just barge in tie up and "regularise" things the next day.

Nah then young alpha, I've been putting my brain into gear and noticed that a few threads ago you asked for info on Teddington to St.Kats. Now here you are asking about landing in France.
Now its a long time since I did any geography but seems to me there's quite a lot of water between St Kats and the French coast, not to mention some pretty substantial bits of land etc etc and yet you've not asked for any info about this in between bit at all !
In the words of that weird guy in Ally McBeal....."I am puzzled"

Boatone,

Thanks for your concern - there's no need to worry! We did Great Yarmouth to Bray, stopping in Lowestoft, Shotley Point, Chatham, and in London at Gallions, so I wanted opinions about getting to St Kats (We had a very uncomfortable wait for the tide by Bergen on the trip).

Having got to Chatham, we'll be going to Ramsgate, and then on to Gravelines or somewhere similar. We hope to be going in the company of one or two others.

and the Channel Islands?

Whilst the learned committee are considering your question I wonder if they could give advice on Q flags for the C I's

The books say you should but the guy I did my Day Skipper with says not to bother.

My mate who I am going with suggested I would be getting a blazer next when I mentioned we should consider Q Flags.

When are you going. We leave Poole for Cherbourg on Thursday at around 1.00 pm

Re: and the Channel Islands?

Not sure if I have ever actually seen a Q flag being flown from a boat. If you like, you could buy one, ready for the unlikely event of anyone saying oi!

It might be more use to have an anchor ball thing, also from the swindlery, so that all very nice and totally insured if anything happens to the boat whilst at anchor.
