I have tried to contact Kos marina by email to book a couple of overnight slots, - June 16th and July 7th, but I can't get a reply.

Is it necessary to book at that time of year? June, I presume would be easier than the July change over.

Thanks.

Believe me the marina is not full plenty of room. Also you can anchor to the right of the marina over against the side. The town harbour is always very busy and VERY VERY noisy

SORRY BUT I WAS REFERRING TO KAS OOPs

Well, it may be quiet now perhaps as lots of boats are not back in the water yet, but in my experience Kos is one of the busiest marinas around. Waiting list for a 10m berth was about 80 two years ago. Last time I tried to get in for a night in Oct I had to book midweek and no hope at the weekend. My advice is most certainly to book. Weekends (charter boat changeover days) it is likely to be full, weekdays better

Concur that town harbour is very public and noisy and requires using the anchor as no lazy lines ay the time I was there. Grim.

In decent weather it is perfectly possible to anchor off the beach to the W of the marina and dinghy ashore.

They've been good at answering e mails in the past but try phoning - helpful people usually.

If it's literally just a crew pick-up that can be done in minutes combine it with a refuel and get them aboard at the fuel station tho that is sometimes untenable due to swell.

Mash - thats useful information - thanks. It does sound like a fairly fraught way of doing the change overs! We have a berth in Leros from 1 July. It's just a shame that flight sinto Kos arrive so late that it requires over night accommodation before taking the ferry to Leros next day.

I have just edited my post further up.

I made a big mistake as i was refering to KAS and not KOS SORRY SORRY

Yep - big mistake!!! I have just emailed them and they have responded - booking only 1 week ahead which is a bit of a nuisance. I suspect it will be difficult so will need to work on a plan B

How about the crew flying to another island where arrival times are more useful vs ferry departures? Rhodos, Khios, Mitilini? Or book on another airline with different arrival times?

In summer Kos marina gets very full on Fridays and Saturdays with charter boats. We have been refused permission to stay an extra night on a Friday and obliged to set off in weather conditions that were not good. Sundays might not be so full. In June and July the town harbour in Kos will be filled with tripper boats and yachts which never seem to move, but you may be able find a space.

Depending on flight times Kalymnos is a possible place to meet crew. it is a short ferry from Mastichari on Kos to Kalymnos town (3 times a day), and Mastichari is a quick taxi ride from Kos airport. But your crew need to be in Mastichari before the last evening ferry.
Another possible place to wait for crew is the anchorage at Kamares on the southwest coast of Kos and not far from the airport. We have also squeezed into Kardamhila harbour, but it's full of local boats.

Your idea of Kalymnos is good, with loads of ferries from Mastihari to Kalymnos which looks like a sizable harbour, also with sheltered space to anchor if full. This site has good ferry times on it. http://www.openseas.gr/openseas/DestinationResults.html

Kos still seems to be the best place to fly into for people who have to travel at weekends, ie those that still work!!!

Kalymnos (also known as Pothia) harbour has a big quay where you can more stern to with your anchor. It is built out in front of the restaurants. There is usually a man there who organises the quayside and directs you where to moore.
I thought the Mastichari ferries were only 3 times a day, but there may be more in summer.

- Photos are great!

· I clipped the ferry times from a local website bit messy, but useful - these are Aprils, so loads of sailings on the conventional ferry. Apparently in July August they run to 23:00 but you need to check the openseas website mentioned for up to date ferries. Even with the later one, it would still be a bit of a scramble to get on that from the late arriving flights

Thanks for the info - this looks like a real runner, and far nicer than Kos Harbour!!!!

Kalymnos Dolphin or Kalymnos Star

There is a timetable in the small kiosk on the harbour where it is also worth checking on the times.

Don't count on the famous "Greek Time" for departures, because they are pretty prompt!!

Kalymnos is a good place for yachts now that the harbour has been modified. Unlike so many, the prevailing NW wind blows along the boat from astern, so great in the meltemi. Pretty much open to the south, when there could be swells. There is some surge from ferries and fishing boats so pull well off the quay. Good eating (and watching sport on TV) ashore. One of the few places in the Dodecanese where Camping Gaz bottles can be exchanged.

Thanks Vyv. Camping Gaz - used to have 4 of these, but they all have ended up as greek ones now! Carry spray paint to do them up before exchanging - stops them looking for rust and rejecting them!!

you can get so much help from this site: We will probably abandon a pickup in Kos town as it looks so easy to get from Kos airport to Kalymnos, but they might need an overnight B&B in Mastihari - but loads more ferries than from Kos town to Leros.

Hope you have a good season - going north I think you said? Are you keeping your berth in Leros?

I was using Camping Gaz as a generic term, all ours are currently dark blue ones but we have not had too much trouble exchanging pale blue in most places. The Partheni yard, N of Leros, will take just about anything - last season we were given an Italian bottle that was slightly different in size from the rest but they happily took it back empty.

We go out next week, launch May 2, probably a short cruise nearby, then going up towards Limnos, Lesvos again. Hope to see you sometime. We are signed up for three years at Leros, so definitely coming back.
