Konsort Stability

Having recently returned to the class room for a shore based Yachtmaster course, the subject of 'Angle of vanishing stability' (AVS) was discussed. Whilst new boats have this quoted as part of the European regulations, How does one find out about the AVS of an old tub like my bilge keeled Konsort? Or does anyone know if there is a formulae?

This type of info normally comes out in yachting mags when they are reviewed. So you could try YM's copy shop for the Konsort.

Laurent Giles are still going strong and they have a web site which might be able to help you.

Mast and spar makers seem to stick around much longer than boat makers so you could contact them. They need to know this info to spec spars etc.

Failing all this you could build a perfect model and play with it in the bath.

Best of luck.

Ther is a simple formula that gives an indication of the boat's stability. It goes like this:
-Take the gross weight of the boat in pounds.Convert it into the volume of displaced water by dividing by 64.
-divide the cube root of this number into the maximum beam in feet.
The stability is good if the result is 2 or less.
Hope this helps.

Was it Laurent Giles or Ed Dubois designed the Konsort? The designer might be willing to supply a copy of a curve which they must have produced as part of the design process. The calculation procedure is iterative and extremely lengthy if done manually as the position of the centre of buoyancy has to be worked out for, say, 5 degree increments of heel angle from zero to inverted. You also need to locate the centre of gravity and this can vary a lot between "identical" boats depending on how they are equipped (loads of cruising gear tends to diminish a boat's stability much more than is realised). Unfortunately, there is no easy way to estimate the AVS but I'd be very surprised if the Konsort's was much under 130 degrees.
