As a general rule
If it just pushes in push it in fully.
If it screws in just let it rest in position on the threads without screwing in
BUT check with the owner's manual to be sure
Surely this has got something to do with it?

I don't know anything about the gearbox but ½ liter of oil is not a lot. Couldn't you check the level of the oil with a screwdriver to get an idea of whether the dip stick should be screwed in or left to rest?![]()
PatNot sure how Id do that. There is only one mark on the dipstick and its about 5mm up from the bottom. The idea is (obviously) that then oil rests in this section. My problem is that I have seen/received two different yeanmat instructions for measuring the oil - the first says to screw the stick back in, the second says to rest it on its thread whilst measuring. its a significant difference and Im keen to get a definitive answer if poss. Guess you are suggesting I drain then refill with 0.5l of oil then measure. Good idea. think I have to suck the oil out though so id be a bit worried it hadnt all come out. what do you think?
Cheers
Pat
Yes, RFM.
Because there are exceptions to the general rule, as Vic implies.
PRM80, a pretty common box, is one of them: the dipstick screws home for level testing.
According to the Yanmar operator manual, the dipstick should be be fully reinserted when checking the oil. If it unscrews, this would mean screwing it back in, not just resting it on the threads.

Yanmar manuals which cover the KM35P gear box, in which the dip stick screws in, specifically state that the oil level is checked without screwing in the dipstick.
Yanmar manuals which describe only the KMH4A gear box make no mention of screwing or unscrewing the dipstick but state that it should be fully inserted when checking the oil level.
Conclusion. In the OP's case the dipstick should not be screwed in when checking the oil level!
Quite how Yanmar can get so confused is anybody's guess!
Well, here's the thing, Vic, your Yanmar manual gives different advice from the one I looked at! On the left, the extract from your manual; on the right, the extract from the manual I looked at.
Quite how Yanmar can get so confused is anybody's guess!
Yes I found that other manual as well. AFAICS it refers to the KMH4A gear box only. I assume that its dipstick does not screw in
The manual i linked to refers to several gearboxes, including the KM35P , which is the subject of this thread. It clearly says do not screw the dipstick in when checking the oil level. Therefore I'd say if the KM35P dipstick screws in then you don't screw it in to check the level.
If someone can post a link which specifically says that the KM35P dipstick should be screwed in when checking the level It will indeed be confusing!
You didn't look at the manual very carefully - it refers to the KM35P gearbox. .
Would have added some links to the Yanmar manuals but the BB connection went down and cannot now find what I was reading!
EDIT : See pages 41 and 42 here http://www.yanmarmarine.com/theme/y...ration-manual/JH5/JH5_EN_operation-manual.pdf
Thats not in fact the other manual I found. I thought it was at first. This is the one I found http://www.manualslib.com/manual/764896/Yanmar-3jh4e.html#manual See pages 40 and 41
Have we perhaps just discovered why there's an expletive in 'RFM'?
I give up, Vic. You post definitively quoting one manual, then say it wasn't that manual and quote another one. At least you've now recognised that Yanmar have issued two conflicting recommendations.
No
I said I'd looked at two manuals .. but had lost the links to both. I subsequently found one and posted the link as an Edit.
You found a different one ......initially I thought it was the other one of the two I'd previously been looking at ...... but it wasn't, it was just a pink herring that confused me initially.
I then found the second one of the two and posted a link to that.
The two manuals I was originally comparing are
http://www.yanmarmarine.com/theme/y...ration-manual/JH5/JH5_EN_operation-manual.pdf which refers to the KM35P gearbox, and others, and says that the dipstick should not be screwed in when checking the oil level.
and
http://www.manualslib.com/manual/764896/Yanmar-3jh4e.html#manual whch appears to only refer to the KMH4A box and makes no mention of screwing the dipstick in either to check the oil level or when finally refitting. I conclude that the dipstick in the KMH4A just pushes in and is not screwed at all.
I don't believe these two conflict each other. When the dipstick merely pushes in it is pushed in fully to read the level ....as is logical. When it is screwed its is not screwed in to read the level .. just the way it is.
It is simply the change from a push in dipstick on the KMH4A to a screw in dipstick in the KM35P which is confusing you.
Right I was late cooking lunch but having cleared up this confusion I am not going to be late for tea!
