But not at all with bare feet, for reasons that I actually can't understand.

if half the year you are barefoot on your boat, obviously feet are getting used to that. I remember when I first fitted the salon carpet on MiToS it was feeling so hard under my feet that I was afraid I made a mistake.
A few days on board, don't even feel it
