Howdy all,

I know very little about dinghies, but I'm after something to keep on the foredeck for a bit of water based exercise/fun.

Not having a big boat, the dinghy needs to be small. I had an oppie for a while, and I'm small enough to have been able to sail it (10st - wet), but not planing was a bit of a bore when it was windy and the bow wanted the dive.

I've been looking an a BIC open. The official site suggest it'll be ok, but I wondered what the general opinion is on this idea?

Handy thing with the boc is that I can haul it aboard with a halyard, and it'll just about fit on the foredeck. However, my concern is I'll be a bit too big to get it planing, which is really what I crave.

Thoughts?

Have you considered either a nesting dinghy, search this forum, tinker tramp. Probably get better performance out of a good nesting dinghy, but in my experience at 11 ish st for the last 35 years good planing fun does not come in any dinghy much smaller than the ubiquitous laser1 (12ft I think). However if short is good then windsurfing or kite surfing are excellent and fit on your boat well. Good luck in your search.

I built myself a scaled down 7'6" version of Danny Greene's 11' nesting dinghy Chameleon - the bow stows inside the stern, and it takes up 4' of length on the foredeck.

If you would like to build yourself a wee dinghy like this (it will take your weight quite happily) I'll send you copies of the plans I drew up.

This was the basic plan that I started off with :

Here is a good website about a Chameleon being built :

And here is the finished Gecko - http://www.yachtvalhalla.net/gecko/finished.html

Another Chameleon being built :

Plans for various dinghies, row boats and skiffs here :

Another simple 2 part 8' dinghy :

C'mon, Nathan, when are you planning to become an adult!!! ROFLMAO

Sorry, mate, but you did rather invite that - & I am not good at resisting temptation!

About your question - why not have a windsurfer? Dead easy to stow along the quarter guard rails, light & easy to handle & go like a train (if you can stay upright).

You'll need a serious hoolie to get am open bic planing. It's just not going to work, forget it. Trust me, if I could get a planing dinghy on the foredeck of a modest cruiser, I'd have done it by now!

However, perhaps a Moth with some system of readily demountable wings would be worth looking at...modern boats have 2 piece masts too which helps! Still reckon you'd need a 35 footer plus to store it on the side deck, but would be a whole heap of fun...

Yes, point taken. I've been sent some more pictures of it, and whilst it does look like brilliant fun for a 12 year old, I feel I may be a little too old for such a thing.

The duck punt looks very interesting, but I don't have the time or space to build anything these days.

Boo.

How about one on each rail? Tie together to make a catamaran which might stay upright.

I think that the 9' simili clinker nestaway here is really lovely looking and a serious future contender. I'd be surprised if it planed though.

RS Tera. Great fun! I've sailed my son's in a good blow and I am c.50% heavier than you! :o Above about 12 knots I reckon you'd easily get her on the plane on a reach.

Go with a kite or windsurf. You'll never get a dinghy small enough to fit on your deck, big enough to fit you in and plane all at the same time!
