Keeping warm - ashore and afloat.

Gill base layer, Craghopper trousers and Berghous wind-stopper fleece

A proper technical base layer is the key, and isn't expensive. False economy to buy cheap stuff unless you know what exactly the specification of of what you are buying

That did the job again today. Had to tip buckets of sea water over the decks to melt the ice, but a great potter around thereafter. And didn't even need outer layer or oilskins in the sunshine, in spite of only perhaps 4C max.

Proper tech clothing is magic for enjoying the outdoors (or indoors) in winter

I discovered that the makers of the military "softie" jacket make softie trousers. Good 'eavens above are they warm or what! I bashered out in November and used the sleeping bag as a duvet I was so toastie. Lots of new ones but I got some second hand ones on ebay for a tenner, best bit of cold weather kit I've ever bought.

+1

I have a few pairs that I have accumulated over the years and gave a set to my dad a few years ago when he was very ill with cancer and could not get warm.

He wouldnt take the buggers off save for washing! :D

As long as you keep them dry nothing will beat them for warmth. The only downside is your feet may feel comparably cold ;D

As well as sailing I also use them for rugby while keeping warm on the touch line as they are easy on/off.

Extreme thermal product testing

The facial expression on my brother below perhaps gives an indication of the suffering he and I endured on a bleak mid winter delivery trip up the North of Ireland - it was actually in April but that weakens the perceivable gravitas of the severity of the cold. My doughty brother was wearing multiple layers of his motorcycling thermals and conventional clothing under his waterproofs - damn near frozen he was.
I on the otherhand was wearing state of the art Ocean rated bespoke yachting gear. The difference was significant. I too was damn near frozen of course but I could at least bask in the heat retained in my wallet caused by the friction of forking out for all the posh marine kit.
