Keep Turning Left

Hi Dylan

I have really enjoyed KTL and would be willing, can't quite use the word happy, to pay to continue to do so.

I'm just getting used to the "micro payment method" with iTunes and am have just tried with Paypal. I went through registration, not too painful and as you say I have already registered with many other "internet places".

Unfortunately it tells me I am already registered, I remember trying to do so a couple of years ago, but as my Visa card has a new number I cannot penetrate Paypal security........ yet.

I do agree with others though: I would be more comfortable with some sort of annual or one off payment, maybe its an age thing.

The idea of the email prompt for each new film is a good one though.

For the time being I'll persist with attempting the micro payments.

Don't forget there's a pint or two waiting for you when you get to the Forth

But I still rather make an annual payment!

I think that would put an unreasonable expectation on Dylan if it was paid in advance, especially if he is (as I suspect) a freelance contractor.

Another option would be to periodically make a DVD ISO image available for paid download. That way anyone with a PC can burn themselves a high quality DVD at no risk to the supplier. This solution would suit me fine, but then I have already bought KTL49 so I'm not the problem!

The regular KTL episodes could still be posted on Youtube but shorter and possibly in lower quality.

keep turning left

Well, having put in my few cents I now feel qualified to add comment.
#49 is actually pretty reminiscent of previous vids.but still enjoyable and in principle it does seem a bit hypocritical to get a fix by watching the previous free 48 and then to gib at forking out in support of the continuing series. Its noticeable that nobody else has been as open, public spirited and resolute ( save Nathan who hits a personal and equally interesting note plus great music in the earlier posts) as to go beyond mere snapping to produce a carefully edited product that suits the subject matter so well.
Who can forget the ice crackling around the hull on the rising tide?

If my few cents gives me any editorial control I would merely ask that Dylan eases off on the power driven community who he's likely to meet, like the rest of us,all the way round this island, this england, this scep...........

Help

I've downloaded ktl49 to my desktop but can't persuade it to play. Which application do I need to be able to play it?

Ta

Ian

Thank you for your compliment. It made me smile :)

I second the motorboat easing off. I do agree with Dylan's distaste, but I've been fed at least 2 litres of vodka by the motorboat community, and as such feel that they have bought my soul and subsequent alliance.

Also, and showing very slight hints of seriousness here, if you convince yourself not to hate a particular group, then you won't have those moment ruining bouts of anger when they do something you don't like. Just let them pass, and if it draws any emotion it should be pity for their lack of intellectual ability to empathise with other water users. The real sailors (motor or sail) do have manners, and I think it's asking a bit too much to expect the layman to have honed a sense of civil membership. Heck, they've not even learned to control a boat yet :)

mobos on ktl

serious question now nathan. How far back through ktl do you have to go so see me having a pop at mobos?

the trouble with the webe, as you should know, is that everything is available all the time

if you look at ktl in chronological order I think you will find that I am going soft on them

or at least recognising that I have probably alrready said too much on the matter

However, if I see some-one being inconsiderate as I travel around the UK then I am hardly likely to turn my camera away from them - and I may well express an opinion or two about what I think of their behaviour.

sorry

Dylan

As the Jam put it: That's Entertainment.

I think a bit of controversy is a good thing. You can't film a sail all the way round Britain without saying something that others disagree with, nor should you.

Dissapointed that you have started to charge Dylan but I suppose it was inevitable.
Being a tight wad I shall look out for your video's in charity shops.
Good luck with your voyage around the UK.Scotland should be cracking!

I too am a bit of a tight wad, and Yorkshireman to boot, however I did not regret my sixty odd penceworth

Well I'd want to follow Dylan all round the coast of Scotland & It would add up to a few bob......a few bob that can be spent on my own boat & having my own adventures.
Take care of the penny's & the pounds take care of themselves ;)

charging for KTL - the experiment coming quietly to an end

It has been a most interesting week

120 99c downloads - about a tank of petrol - in return for a week of editing

a free sailing film gets between 5,000 and 30,000 hits

Christopher Columbus is correct

99c is way too much for the average sailor to pay

so as a business plan this is a real lulu

The change in relationship with the viewers has also been most edifying

One man in the States has sent me five pretty vituperative emails blaming my film for destroying his hard disk

another person paid up - then said that now he is a customer he won't be buying anymore unless I promise to stop saying unkind things about mobos and Arthur Ransome.

A third says that his internet connection went down half way through the download and wants me to send the film to him on disk

that aside the economics are coming home to roost

Yesterday I paid my overwinter and engine service yard bill - £400 - and I have insurance to pay, antifoul - you know the costs

so the 120 downloads does not go far

Thanks to those who stumped up though - that was great -

thanks also to the guys from Tollesbury - the cheques are pinned to my notice board as a sort of trophy - I will never cash them

currently my plan is to finish off doing a decent job on the east coast rivers as and when I get the time to edit the films between real work. So it will be editing at weekends only.

I aim to make a properly produced record of the Blackwater, Colne, Backwaters, Stour, Orwell Deben and Alde. I will have a decent HD shot at the Roach and Crouch whren I come back around again in about five years time

The big Sony finally succumbed to the damp and the salty air of this winter - although the tligh was sublime - so that is £3,000 down the tubes. I cannot justifty taking the pro camera sailing anymore.

The Slug and I will continue with the journey between proper work filming trucks and sheep over the coming years.

I will squirt a few frames on the waterproof Xacti to help remind me of the experience. I will post the odd vlog.

Of course something may turn up to change the circumstances

But I would be a crazy man to carry on with the proper films once I leave the Alde in April.

The logic is simple - if I keep making the sailing films I run out of money to carry on sailing.

CC old friend - it seems you win

Well Dylan it's a big thanks from me - I enjoyed my 99c download & the other stuff on YouTube. But I can see it makes no sense to be tied down to having to make the films and suffer financial loss (& a bit of abuse) as well.
Best wishes for the future.

Dylan - I know this might sound dumb, but have you tried selling your vids to a commercial TV outfit? I mean your stuff is easily as good as 3 men in a boat, only without the idiot factor! What about the Discovery Channel or similar? I know someone (another ex-BBC man in fact) who has them filming his restoration of an old fishing boat. Don't actually know if they are paying much, but one thing often leads to another...

Just a thought as I very much sympathise with your situation!

tv

this experiment would prove to any TV producer that there is not much of a demand for this stuff - far better to spend your time making films about trucks, cars, celebs and gadgets.

And as for three men in a boat - its a prog about three hugely entertaining men with a boat in the background.

That is why it is successful

Dylan
