Keel bolt paint

If you have steel keel bolts (non-stainless type) how do you protect them from rust/corrosion?

Is the following acceptable:
. Wire brush any visible detrious
. Apply rust converter (ferton)
. Paint with red oxide.
. Cover with denso tape

Anything else that should be done to reduce corrosion risks?

Keep the bilges dry, corrosion needs water. After each venture out - dry the bilges and ensure they cannot get wet (chase leaks).

I'm not sure about the Denso tape - it is going to hide anything inside and/or until its a bit late. Though if the bilges are dry the tape will be the belt in belt and braces.

Denso tape is remarkably good at inhibiting corrosion but not a product that can be used where anything will come in contact with it. The ferrous motor of my windlass that is regularly splashed with seawater is wrapped in it but with polythene taped around it.

The keel bolts on my boat are bolted through a thick raised spine with shallow bilges either side.
So never emersed in any water that might accumulate. I only ever seem to have a few dribles of water that are easily mopped.

I guess the denso tape wraps the bolts and washers to exclude any dampness, if done when all is dry.

Yes, that's what I was hoping for. I'll put some polythene over the top, as you say, where the floorboards might contact the bolt tops.

Dunno how it would compare with the red oxide, but I might abrade with a flattened beercan in a drill chuck, using sunflower, linseed or Penetrol as a binder, and maybe putting some casings from dead dry cells in the can before flattening, if I can round some up.

Think my keel bolts are all "encapsulated" (oo-er) but I might try the above on the keels.

Have you used Denso tape? It 'feels' similar to medium weight grease heavily daubed upon cheesecloth but far more sticky. Utterly impossible to paint it or even handle unless you are very persistent.

Yes I have used denso, that is why I was questioning painting denso tape!!

I think a small peice of polythene over the top to prevent the boards touching the denso tape would work in my situation.
