Katadyn PowerSurvivor 40E water maker

Not sure how you'd get it behind the exhaust.

Why do you say that? Sorry, I'm not with you.

My exhaust comes out the side of the hull (beside the motor) so there is plenty of room behind the exhaust to install a watermaker inlet if I wanted to.

I have no intention of installing the watermaker inlet within (say) half a meter of the exhaust so I will take advice of the experts and install it deep on the other side of the keel

Has anybody got any experience with this compact water maker? The power consumption and production are adequate for my needs. But how reliable are they? How noise are they? Any feedback welcome.

We purchased our Katadyn 40E and fitted it before leaving UK in 2008. In the 6 years to date our unit has had no less than 3 new motors of which 2 of them included new drive gear mecahnisms. When the unit worked it was excellent although somewhat noisey. On average it drew 4-5 amp/hour. We would run it off our batteries for anywhere between 1 hour and 5 hours most days.

Because it kept breaking motors (we think there was a problem with either the pump shaft our the pump end plate putting too much pressure on the motor and drive gear) we ultimately lost faith in it.

Throughout all our problems, Katadyn's Customer Service has been brilliant, the support form Jim MacDonald of Mactra (Katadyn Uk Agent) was second to none. Nothing was too much trouble.

Katadyn accepted it's failings and kindly refunded all our monies (original purchase costs, shipping costs and repair costs).

Would I buy another Katadyn. I do believe they are a very good unit and in most cases very reliable. But if I did buy another and it failed I would regret it. So the answer has to be no. Now looking for another watermaker or going to build my own.

The link is six years old!
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I realise that this link is of certain age, but that doesn't mean it could not work.
Luckily I managed to find a link to the book and it has been very helpful for me and will be for others.
