Rodman 38 with KAMD 300 boat doing well so far. Put about 18 hours on her now.
Yesterday had a bit of a wild ride - weather forecast not resembling reality but it happens. About 40 mins into the journey, the starboard engine misbehaved about 3 or 4 times. Going along @ 3100 rpm ish and the engine would slow down to 2500 (ish) revs for a few secs them immediately pick up again. (not what you want with a F5 chasing you) First thoughts are fuel filters, however I put new 10 micron racor filters in that morning before setting off. Engine fuel filter was changed @ 18 hours ago. (4 weeks ago). Once we got into flatter water everything seemed to be OK no other issues.

Fuel tanks did have some crud etc in when I bough the boat but everything looks very clean now (burnt 1000+ litres so tanks have effectively been emptied and refilled and given a few really good stir ups as one or two trips have been a bit bumpy). Should I change the engine filter anyway to eliminate it as a possible cause?

Any other suggestions of possible causes. Not getting any error lights flashing so no other immediate clues.

3100 is where the turbo starts doing its job and the SC is redundant, I'd guess the large swell was knocking it off its power band making the sc come back in starting the cycle all over again. Did you try running at 3200?

My past boat had the outdrive vs . SC range was 1400-2600
It's deffo the turbo loosing boost
Heaven seas and stuffing it in will slow it a bit , but needs to get down to near 2600 ish if healthy?
That's the Q " healthy " -- turbo wear starts like this 1 st signs and the frequency increases any stress / load shows first .
If you are bored one day take the elbow off and have peek in to see the tip clearance and state of the blade tips .
There s been a few theads on VP kad turbo ware recently engines hunting etc
Of course ck filters + air leaks , but after that -----
It's a pity you can't see the EGT which if raised burn the blade tips -gradually then the "hunting " starts

It depends which engine you have .
The kad 42/42/43 is sensed by a speed indicator switch but the 44/300 has a boost pressure sensor and a flywheel sensor so it can be controlled more precise according to load , throttle position and boost pressure .

thanks for the replies. I did increase rpm to @3400 to get out of the rough sea and had no more problems . I did wonder if my throttles were playing up. I will keep an eye on operations and see what happens. Still love the superchargers though - have to be careful mooring up. Virtual pints all round.

I assume we are talking twin engine installation? if so one tank or two?

Was it one or both engines hunting?

Sounds like the "Irish problem" already mentioned ie shit in your fuel line or over the pick up.

Sounds like engine is hunting, ie restricted fuel pick up.

How bad was the old element when you changed it?

Check element, is the bowl clean and water free, see if it is easy to fuel through supply line to filter.

If you suspect a restriction in the pick up line blow back down it with a dinghy pump or compressed air and see if that cures it.

Depending on how bad the element was when you changed it you may need to clean fuel in the tanks or clean the tank?
