KAD 44 Replacement with KAD 42

New turbo not working? I understand why an old one can stop doing its job, but I can't see any reason a new one wouldnt work. It's just a thing that spins in the exhaust gas. Must be a problem with the intake or exhaust components surely.

I read "new " as new to the boat not necessary a original VP approved part
Could be after market ,recon , somthing found in the back of a cupboard -or any combo of the above .
Best not to ask if you not pumping your own ££ @ it .

Yes, that's a fair point. I would imagine it is a recon turbo that was put in although of course I could be wrong.

As you say, the work is being done under warranty so as long and when it goes back afloat everything is working then I'll be happy.

This could be a case of wrongly diagnosing the fault, some engineers just keep fitting new bits until the problem goes away

Thought I'd post a brief update on this;

Boat came out the water a week ago and went to dealers yard. After a chat decided to try stick with the KAD 44 instead of swapping to the 42 so he's had his guy looking at it. So far, the oil leak was found to be coming from the seal / gasket of the rocker cover. This has now been replaced and fixed. The exhaust bellows was found to be split so obviously now replaced also. Finally, the turbo was found to be not working. This was replaced and had initially hoped to get back in water today but for some reason new turbo is also not working so they need to do some additional troubleshooting.

Hopefully sorted next week, fingers crossed.

I really hope your boat will now be sorted.

What intrigues me is that so many things need fixing / have gone wrong so soon after the sea trial-during which the boat performed OK.

I agree and have wondered the same thing many times to be honest. Can't help but wonder whether it was just bad luck on me. I know the boat was checked over and run up before it went in the water after purchase as the dealer regularly updated me with videos of what they were doing to it then on the initial sea trial we covered around 20nm which should have been sufficient to pick up on anything.

So did they fit a brand new turbo as that's the only way to cure a worn out one, they wear on the exhaust side casting giving too much clearance between the fan and the housing, that's how you loose power.
Obviously it isn't the turbo unless they have fitted a used one which is about as good as the old one.

The rocket cover has a gasket that's been obsolete for years so you can use sealant, I hope they took the pipes off to replace it, but while the cover was off did they remove the injectors and have them tested? As I've said before there a 2 stage injector and once there worn you will get the scenario you have, seriously I'd be asking questions. Keep us posted .

Right, another update...

Yes, the rocker cover was re-sealed with sealant - all seems to be OK (so far)

The turbo was a reconditioned one and not new. Obviously I would have preferred a new one, but all the work was carried out under warranty so I'm not going to complain.

Split exhaust bellows were also replaced with new.

While it was out the water, the dealer also changed the anodes and felt that it was under propped with the ones they put on initially so they changed to new ones two sizes bigger.

Went back in the water yesterday, however we were only able to trial in the harbour as it was too rough outside. All went well, but obviously couldn't exceed the 8 knt speed limit.

Went out today to give a run and everything seemed great. No sign of leaking oil, no dirty steam billowing back on to the transom and I now have power within the turbo RPM range.... BUT...

As always seems to be the case with me, nothing is straight forwards. Considering they apparently put bigger props on, there hasn't seemed to be any difference in speed at all which I find strange but can live with this. The big concern however is a couple of minutes after leaving the harbour and while cruising at 3100 rpm there was this loud pop. Didn't seem to change anything with the engine but I put it in neutural and had a look in the engine bay. Again nothing of concern so set off again and all seemed well. The trouble is, considering the history I've got with this boat I'm just waiting for something to break, but after hearing the pop I was out for another 20 minutes or so and everything remained fine and gauges all where they should be.

If the dealer has changed the props to longer pitched ones, I'd want to check that I could still hit 3900rpm at full throttle.
