Kad 42s power loss

Just remove an exhaust elbow and have a look at the blade gap. As stated in your first post your problem sounds exactly like worn turbos but dosnt explain the sudden loss of power. If both turbos had seized which is unlikely but possible then it would explain the sudden loss of power you had. Again removing the exhaust elbow would soon tell you. If you do need to remove the turbos we usually change a pair of turbos in about 10 hours. If its your first time you can double that!

As the turbos normally wear slowly people don't notice the power dropping off until the supercharger starts cycling in and out. Then the turbos get replaced and the boat is transformed.

It's a 10 min job to remove the elbow and have a look.

Just looked at u tube vid. Sometimes I'm afraid just a rebuild does not do the trick and its a new housing, better to just fit a new unit. You don't have to buy from a dealer, I have a dealer up here that supplies me with brand new units.

Or try yourself. Midland turbo, Nottingham.

Two points here.

1 , if the prop bushes were slipping the revs would be at max as the engines are not loaded due to the prop spinning on the hub.

2. At 3400 rpm the turbos are def working as the supercharger cuts out around 2800 rpm, lift the engine hatch next time you do a test you will see the front of the charger pulley stationary, the belt still turns when the engine is running.

I'd say your turbos are worn, take the exhaust elbows of and look at the turbine blade, if there is a gap around the outer edge its worn, by the age of your boat I'd say its highly likely.

Paul,
As a mildly enthusiastic amateur I wouldn't even begin to think of disagreeing with you on anything to do with mechanics :-)
Only thing I would say is that we didn't get max on the engine that had the duff prop bushes as far as I can recall, which is why I thought the problem was on the other engine as it wouldn't get up to power due, as I subsequently discovered, to the other prop bush slipping. To be fair the whole thing baffled me for a while and I couldn't work our what was happening when we were at sea.

I used Universal Turbos in Fordingbridge who rebuilt mine. about £475+ VAT. They will probably very corroded when you remove them but it can all be fixed.
I do think 10 hours is a bit excessive for a pro but I stand to be corrected.

Hi thanks for the info, will inspect them next week when I am back at the marina and probably give them a call, was it £ 475 for the two turbos ? What was the turn round time? Thanks
