Hi all,

Just wondering if any of you have replaced the Volvo AD41 Air Filters with K&N type.

Being next to the oil breather they get pretty mucky pretty quickly - I thought it might be an idea to replace them with washable ones?

Thoughts anyone?

I fitted them to 61a.

Definitely improved pickup on acceleration. Got rid of the air boxes too which was handy.

You need to size them correctly for airflow capacity.

Hi, I have a different brand diesel and a very satisfied washable filter. I have a Cummins qsb 5.9 380hp engine and orginal (9 yeards old) Airsep filter the same concept as K & N. Link Filter Maintenance Guide.

Recommended washing every 250 hours, I have a pressure gauge and engine hours accumulated + 600 hours past service and everything is fine, however, I do wash and new oil next time the boat in winter storage.

Thanks Gents for thoughts thus far.

-I guess on sizing the filters, I could just ping K&N and ask for the appropriate size for a 3.0L engine?
-I would use the Walker AirSep filter (they do one for the AD41) but they don't sell directly in the UK - really really expensive to get across to here - I do have Walker AirSep Crankcase filters and they are brilliant.
-I was hoping they would be less than £135! but if they reduce the start up smoking at all, maybe worth it :)

Thanks again.

Hi
I have ad41p in a princess 330 and fitted wash able filters several years ago very large cone type if you can wait till weekend I can take a picture if you want of them fitted I have the rocker breather going into a bottle instead of the filters so it keeps them cleaner but they don't breath at all I got them from a motor factors that do tuning bits same ad KN but a different make not that expensive

Hi, many thanks, that would be really helpful if you could take a pic - time not urgent.

Out of interest, did you notice any performance changes; power, smoke?

Someone mentioned to me that the turbo noise might be more noticeable? Did you notice that?

Thanks again.

Hi All sorry to resurrect an oldish thread but I'm contemplating doing the same for mine as it currently has no filters and the breathers have made a mess!

Im thinking of a large cone filter from ebay item number 381930454375 and using a 90deg bend at there wont be room to straight over the turbo, ebay number 264026312700 and a joiner with a welded on breather inlet, ebay number 151495536062

Anyone know why this wouldnt work?

Is that a paper filter? Any oil mist would quickly soak into a paper filter and block it. Why not convert to the later 41 system by making a blanking plate to coverrr the existing breather and fitting the later aft rocker cover (or modifying yours) with a baffle inside and a 6mm hose leading to downstream of the main airfilter.

I have a Tamdp 41 -p that’s a bit smokie but at low revs it’s not . Would a KN filter make it breath better on higher revs and get a clearer burn rate . What KN filter would I need

Hi Jamie, I'm going to fit this in a couple weeks, ill see how it works if that helps!

Its an oiled filter, im planning on introducing the breather after the filter as it would have been on the normal filter housing so it shouldn't matter anyway hopefully!

Are you sure 6mm hose is going to be big enough? even small car engines have bigger breather hoses than that.

Let me know how it goes and some pictures would be great .

Cheers mate that helps me as I need to get the breather inlets welded and wasn't sure of the size!

Of course I will update to see if it fits ect and hopefully remember some pics..

Interesting to hear that.
I've used washable K&N air filters on some cars with good results, but for some reason I never thought to do the same on boat engines.
I was unable to find them for my engines though, after a quick look on K&N website.
Before wasting further time with searches, does anyone know if washable filters of some sort are normally available also for big(ish) diesel engines, and MAN particularly?
TIA!

There must be a calculation available for the air flow ect, but I specced mine a little by eye.. will see. also I doubt they get that clogged? Thinking the engine bays is pretty clean compared to road dust
