JW's Upgrades for 2016 - Tender

No worries M, it's the just old "pretend-it's-hazardous" trick, commonly used to justify a major delay actually due to having diverted your rib to another unpredicted top urgent order.
Probably, they already started building another one for you, and now that you have seen these pics, they are bound to make it identical anyway! :encouragement: :p

Just teceived this pic.
Loaded and sealed into container.
Left Nautical Ventures at 1300 (Florida time) today.

At last it is on its way.
Whoopie!!

Just had notification that the Novurania has FINALLY left Florida.
Over the last couple of weeks, I've been tracking the container ship that was booked to pick the tender up.
The container was loaded last night and the ship sailed this morning.
Calling at Savannah, Norfolk, Antwerp, Bremerhaven and finally Southampton (arriving around the 26th Jan)
I've no idea how long it will take to clear customs but I have Peters and May on the case.
I'll post some pics when we finally pick it up in Southampton.

Mike, I think you're sorted now on your plans to enable you to slide the tender out of the way on the flybridge, but just in case you're interested I've been sent details of a new product that does exactly what you wanted, albeit it looks a bit expensive and over-complicated

Thanks Nick

That would probably have worked.
A week ago, I plucked up the courage and bought the teak for wooden ones and arranged for some stainless steel pieces from a local s/s fabricator.
Teak wasn't cheap - I've got a local joiner lined up to cut the profiles with a band saw.
I've cut some plywood templates from drawings that Novurania sent but I'm not going to get the teak cut until the dinghy actually arrives though - just in case.

Thanks for posting

I've been tracking the container containing our new Novurania.
The ship has been to loads of places - the likes of Houston, Charleston and Newport before crossing the Atlantic last week.
Then it was Antwerp and Bremerhaven before finally arriving at Southampton.
Should have been unloading yesterday morning.
That got updated to this morning but it has spent all day going backwards and forwards around the Nab Tower.
See this track:-

Update is that she will dock tomorrow AM
Very frustrating.

Great news Mike - how long do you expect for customs etc? Was only thinking of this today as I had to go down to Stokeinteignhead and went past you - wondered if it had arrived yet

Actually, it seems that customs clearance is really quick.
The actual clearance takes an hour and then another three hours for the paperwork to circulate.
I wish that the rest of this process had been that quick.

The ship has spent yet another day going back and forth around the Nab Tower.
Anyway, it seems that they will be docking sometime this evening.
Peters and May wanted to unload on Friday but it needs me there with a road trailer and I can't manage Friday.
So we have decided to travel over to Southampton at crack of dawn on Monday.
If thats the case, the Novurania should be here in Devon that evening (Monday)
I can then measure for the electronics that I'm planning on fitting and check the chock templates that I made months ago.
I have the teak blocks and I know of someone with a band saw who will cut them to my templates.
I made the templates up from CAD drawings - printed out several A3 sheeds and taped them together - then marked out on some ply sheets.
I'm sure the templates will need some alteration once I have the boat here.
If they fit, the electronics will be a Standard Horizon VHF radio and a Garmin EchoMAP plotter.
Lots of other things to do before we take it out to Spain - probably at the end of March.

Good luck fitting the electronics. The small garmin 155mm wide won't fit neatly I fear. I bought a second blank dash from novurania and moved the st wheel to starboard in order to fit a ray marine a67 which is 164mm wide. Also I fitted a black box VHF so only the handset appears on the dash. Space really is tight if you want to keep the 2 Yamaha gauges, which are useful things IMHO
Of course if you are trunion mounting the plotter then you can fit it but my advice would be to ask novurania to send you a new dash board. $360 iirc. Then you have a blank canvas.
Best of luck with delivery

It certainly seemed to take a while a various stages, although well worth the wait I'm sure once you get on the water. ;)

Looking to get an impromptu Sportsboat/rib meet together in Plymouth over Easter, if it's still here and you fancy an extended test, you're welcome to join us... (Probably a group cruise to Looe and/or Salcombe on alternate days - or the Sound and Tamar if weather dictates otherwise!) I'm sure you're hoping to be out in SC by then, but if for any reason you're not and fancy a local run, feel free to call.

Thanks but I think that the Easter weekend is the best time to take it down to Spain.
Maybe before then I will run it round Torbay - if it is warm enough!!

Good to hear things are moving now. i will keep an eye out for you Monday morning and if im about, will pop over and say hello.

Customs should not be a major delay as long as the duty and tax is paid, do you know when they are shunting the container off the quay (i cant remember if you moved this as an FCL or as a groupage shipment?)

I think Peters and May are removing it from the quay on Monday morning am.
I'm picking it up from their depot - I think.

Just checked the ships progress - he didn't hang around - went in at midnight and out again early this morning.
I bet he was ?issed about waiting three days at the Nab

The suspenders are killing me, any news on the new arrival? :D

Just got back home to Devon after a long day collecting it.
I know that there are at least 3 other Novuranias owners on this forum but other people might find my story/report interesting.
Mainly because I have bought a boat in the US and had it shipped halfway across the world.
This is not a "run of the mill" purchase.
I hope I'm not boring you but the story continues:-

It was originally planned to collect it from Peters and May from their Eastleigh Deopt at 09:00 this morning.
However, over the weekend, I received an email saying that the Port required an email authorizing P&M to collect it.
This delayed the planned collection to 11:00 this morning so we arrived at 10:30 with our Landcruiser and trailer.
Only to be told that the docks had been experiencing delays due to strong winds - it would definitely be there by 13:00.

The container finally arrived at 14:00

The seal was intact

The guys in P&M's depot were extremely helpful
Long forks were fitted to their truck and out she came.

Then, using a carpet attachment for the fork lift, she was lifted gently onto our trailer.

Sorry, we deliberately left the shrink wrap on to protect her on the trip down do Devon.
Arrived safe and sound.
It is now starting to feel like she belongs to us.
Too dark when we arrived so I will post some more pics tomorrow when we have stripped off all the shrink wrap.
If there is interest.

Slight hickup - it seems that there is some kind of cockup with customs over the actual date of import.
I would like to think that the RIB was imported last week as it was on the quay from Thursday am.
In fact, all the customs calcs were done then so that I could send the VAT payments etc.
But today, it seems that customs want more - they seem to have changed their dollar/pound exchange rates.
So it looks like it is going to cost me another £400 ish in VAT - I'm going to investigate further before I pay though.
I'm actually quite surprised that Customs don't take the sterling figure that I actually paid (after converting it to dollars) and calculate the VAT/Duty on that - after all that was what I paid.
But, they have actually charged me (in pounds) at today's exchange rate.
I said that I thought that wans't very fair but the answer that P&M gave was that I should look at it another way - I actually paid less for it because I paid dollars when the exchange rate was lower.
Just different ways of looking at it but it doesn't seem right to me.
I would have thought that the important figure was what I paid in sterling.
Being a small fish in a big sea, I will probably just end up paying but it doesn't seem correct and I feel "stitched up" because they changed the rate between Jan and Feb (collected on the 1st Feb).
End or rant.

I'm afraid it isn't, M.
What is relevant for custom clearance is the value of the imported goods, which is normally (*) taken from the invoice.
And I suppose the invoice is in USD, 'innit?
I'm not saying that you don't have reason to argue about the applicable exchange rate - not sure about the rules on that, just commenting on the principle.

Btw, the asterisk is because the customs could take a value even higher than the one shown on the invoice, if they had reasons to think that there is a substantial difference.
I mean, if you would have imported the thing with an invoice showing a $1 value, they would have (with reason, obviously) thought that you were trying to avoid the payment of VAT/duties, hence being entitled to calculate them on whatever value they considered correct.
Of course, that has nothing to see with the exchange rate, but just for thoroughness' sake... :)
