Re the SLR thing, it isn't the SLR bit that matters, that was a mechanical technique for allowing you to see through the lens exactly what the film was about to see when the shutter was fired. Nowadays all you need is a screen to show you what the photocells are seeing when you ask the chip to record the image. The 'reflex' bit - as in flinging mirrors about mechanically, has surely been redundant for decades?

As to phones with pinhead lenses, they can never compete with a proper sized camera as no matter how sensitive the electronic recording medium there is optically no substitute for a larger lens, both for accuity (resolution) and low-light performance. Just as binos with a 20mm lens can never compete with one using 50mm. Just the comparative differnce between the bino example and a pinhead lens vs one an inch across is potentially several orders of magnitude better rather than two or three times for the bins.

Else why does NASA keep putting ever bigger lenses into orbit?
Size in (comparable quality) optics is still everything for resolution and low-light capture.

They do it because it justifies the massive expenditure in dollars, and because nobody told them that they could have replaced the Hubble telescope with an iPhone.
