Sad

As a yachtie I decided to visit the Motor Boat forum for the first time a couple of days ago to get a taste of the 'other side'. I must admit I have found it rather depressing, having witnessed an almost 'tribal' hatred between motor and sail.

I don't want to comment on the merits of the original case because that has been analysed to death and beyond - I simply want to say I wish people would take a deep breath before launching into some of the posts seen here.

I recently saw a well-respected web-based community totally brought down because of the uneccessarily destructive attitude of the forum members.

Sure, we should all be allowed to air opposing views but it is the manner with which this has been done that causes me offence. Before I submit anything remotely controversial I always use this acid test - would I really be happy to say this face-to-face to someone if I was standing next to him/her in a bar? If not, then it fails the respectability test and shouldn't be posted.

I expect some of you will say that if I am offended by this stuff then I should simply sign off and not come back - and of course, I could easily do that. But would that really have achieved anything?

Re: Woah on there boy

Coming on here and stiring up all this just cus one pr@t in Jubliee did something stupid is actually doing MORE to fuel the rift.

You could have taken a more pragmatic approach which would have hepled to bring us together rather than widen the gap !!!!.

of course IMHO and FWIW

Re: Sad

Pity you came to look this week. It's usualy the shutbut forum that has this problem. Here is usually all sweetness and light. And would be today. Had some ragstick not come along with acusations and promoting a diesel tax rise.

Re: Sad

As the person who started the latest installment of this long running saga i feel that i should comment.

All i am trying to say is lets stop having a go and do something about it. I have many times in the past asked for the revelant mags to do some training days for both sets of people.

As i am very experienced in both power and sail i can understand what is what but not everybody has this knowlegde.

I am open for other ideas as to how to solve this problem as if not i have already spoken about the end result.

While we still have this kind of debate going on everyday we cannot as water users present a united front against mr brown and the eurocrats....so it's over to you lot out there.....what do you say...???

Re: Sad

Why don't you read all of my posts and you will see that i am not in favour of a tax rise.....what i want is for us all to get along and fight it.

but how can we when we have this conflict and do not present a united front.....so you are one for saying a lot.....how can we (and sensible ideas please) stop the problems that we both have with each other.....i am all ears..???

Re: Sad

"is that hurry up my brown and put tax on red diesel so that we can finally rid the water of such people....i rest my case....!!!"

Ok so I'm thick. Your not in favour of tax rises and you want us to all get along. Try getting along with my anchor stuck up yer bum!!

Re: Sad

I think there is the equivalent of institutional racism in the stinkie and raggie communities. As a raggie last year the family was kept awake to 2.30 am by a party on the next door stinkie. I naturally assumed 'typical stinkie behaviour' but it turned out to be a party where the stinkies were joined by their family on the adjacent sailing yacht.

The point of this message is that its not a question of stinkie vs raggie, but instead crass behaviour versus the norm.

However, the original poster here is right - putting up large amounts of wake close to a smaller slow moving craft is crass behaviour. Its crassness like this, and the resulting potential for accidents that will hasten compulsory training.

Tie them all up

I reckon it's the raggies which create all the wake - especially when they leave their bl@@dy halyards twanging against the mast through the night! Didn't get a wink of sleep last Saturday night so it's hardly any wonder us stinkpoters are in a bit of a bad mood.

IMHO, FWIW,etc.
