If the owner of a 40 something motorboat called jubilee i think is on here ccan he please get in touch with me. I wish to enquire why he passed between 2 yachts upon leaving portsmouth on Sunday am. he left only about 15ft each side of himself and was doing about 25kts. The resulting wash almost caused e to go overboard as i was on the bow at the time.

I know that we have seen this sort of thing on her time and time agina and i do not wish to drag up old rubbish but all i can say is (and i await your reactions)...is that hurry up my brown and put tax on red diesel so that we can finally rid the water of such people....i rest my case....!!!

How can you possibly complain about wash at the entrance to Pompey ? If it's not a close passing stink pot it's a ferry, a pilot boat, a war ship, etc etc. I don't think I've EVER been into Pomey without having to hang on for dear life in the entrance.

Perhaps it wasn't the best time to be on the foredeck ? Perhaps he had to pass between you to comply with local rules and stay in the small boat channel ?

Can't see how those issues are related...

It would be very short sighted of us raggies to cheer any increase of tax on red diesel - it would kill off another British industry.

I might not be a fan of Sunseekers blasting within about 3 metres of me but I'm very glad they're made in the UK.

Re: lets just see

I don't wish to see anybody forced off the water by anthing...but will it realy take a death or 2 to sort this out...i think so.

Some time ago i called for a training session to be run by the mags.

What i want is 5 yachties and 5 motor boaties to try each others boats...this would show motorboats the real danger of wash on small yachts and show the problems of handling a motorboat.

I have a lot of experience of yacht sailing and a fair bit of motorboat driving.

I know just what it's like but do others....

I want to see an article in both mags showing each other just what it is like...

What do you all say to that...!!!

This wasn't near the entrance. It was half way between the entrance and Gillkicker point. I was about 100ft from the shore. The boat in question was fully on the plane and going very fast. When i shouted and waved my arms for him to slow down i just got a look of contempt from him and the lady (well i think it was) next to him.

I always give motor boats lots of room as i know what they are like to handle but i just wish that we could all just think about our actions before we do them.!!!

Re: lets just see

I find motor boats needlessly pasing too close at high speed as annoying as the next raggie.

But what about natural waves ? how about a rough sea or a wind-over-tide chop ?Wash might make life a little bumpy but I can't really see why people get so upset by it. If wash is a danger to your boat it really cant be very sea worthy.

Re: lets just see

As a yachtie I think that is a reasonable idea - there is nothing to lose after all. If a trial proved successful, you could easily use these forums (pl.= fora?) to arrange for 'exchange trips' on each other's boats for those interested and prepared to host a visitor aboard their vessel for a half-day. I would up for it. We might get bored after a couple of hours on each other's boats and return to our own vessel with relief - but we would probably take something constructive away from it......

Whenever I have visited the bridge of a ship I have found it a very interesting useful experience and the watch officers have always been interested from a yachtie who lives 40ft nearer to the waves than them!

Re: lets just see

it's very dangerous for a start.

Rough waves are already there and you take them into account when you set out.
But boats passing too close is another thing. It usually happens when you are near a marina or harbour when you have crew on the deck handling sails and such.

I have no problem with wash in the middle of the solent from any boat that passes me at distance...but all it takes is a few seconds of a lack of concentration and bang...somebody is killed..it's all about risk management.....and this is a risk that need not be there...

Re: lets just see

well I'm not defending anyone, wasn't there after all.

I try to be as considerate as I can to all sea users but I still reckon I've probaby unwittingly scared the life out of kids sailing Optimists as I pass them at 4 knots in the harbour for example - my wash was probably as annoying to them as power boat wash is to us. It's all relative.

This is very true but i bet you go around their stern if you can and think about what they are going to do before you pass them.
It all comes down to understanding what your and their actions are and taking them into account before you act.

Re: lets just see

Check out the August issues of MBY and YM, where two pairs of readers swapped boats on a bank holiday weekend in the Solent. Interestingly, the only crap behaviour experienced all day was from sail-boaters, and even when the raggies (in a Princess 45) buzzed the blow-boat at a distance of ten yards and at 20 knots it failed to have any significant affect on the levels of our G&Ts. Dunno what all the fuss is about. Think raggies just enjoy moaning for the sake of it (I think it comes from a lifetime reading the Daily Mail).

Re: lets just see

You have got my point exactly. We are all just as bad as each other some times.

But back to an earlier point ..if you power boaters don't start talking to us raggies....then when mr brown comes knocking with tax on diesel we will not lift a finger to help.

So you power boaters really need us more than we need you....and thats a fact..!!!

What complete B*LL*X. If you didn't care what the duty was on fuel then why does every raggie boat have a diesel engine. You all spend half you're time motoring everywhere afterall. Why not have petrol engines instead, you'd get more power out of a smaller, cleaner unit.

And if it weren't for us stinkies you would have to pay even more for all you boating accessories, smaller market therefore higher prices. And its always the stinkies that give you a tow when you breakdown so shutt uppaa your face.

yada yada..
