Like many others I have used Jotun Seaqueen for years and have been very pleased with it, or was, as you cannot buy it anymore for all the stupid reasons we now know and Jotun must now have lost an important market share and income as it was not only a good product but very competitive.

Using the Seaqueen let me stay 'in' for two years no problem with usually just slime covering the hull at lift out, now another two years on I have to lift out again for the anodes and antifoul etc., I have looked at the specification of the so called Jotun replacement called 'Mare Nostrum' but note the specifications is not the same and its not as strong so probably not as good!.

Anybody used this Mare Nostrum with good results? or what are others going to replace the Jotun Seaqueen with without paying stupid prices now asked for the excellent Micron Extra that I also used to use for years.

I've used Premier Paints Semi hard AF https://premiermarinepaints.co.uk/types/antifouling for 3 years.

It was last done June '13 with 3 coats and I can only see slime on the hull to date but won't know more than that until a haul out for re engining next month.

Prior to that one coat lasted a season and the yard staff seemed impressed with the lack of growth given the cost of it. Its easy to apply - I use an emulsion brush as it goes on thicker than a roller and without the splatter.

It works better than XM Hx3000 which was not pleasant to apply.

I had to use Mare Nostrum last year, I wasn't over impressed although I suspect last season was a bad one for fouling. I didn't get any shells attaching (or very few) but I did get a 'beard' around the waterline and a few short strands of weed lower down on the hull. I didn't have a mid-season scrub other than the waterline. I'm thinking of trying to become a 'professional'.

Ditto. I found it was fine while I was using the boat through the summer, but the beard grew once she sat on the mooring for a while.
 
I am another who had excellent results with Sea Queen. Trying Mare Nostrum this season, so don't know if it works yet. If anyone decides to become a "professional" and gets Sea Queen - I would be quite willing to purchase some of any excess stock!
 
Anyone with MCA coding can buy Seaforce - SML want to see a copy of the coding cert. Have applied Seaforce 30 in September after two seasons of Seaqueen and am awaiting the results.
Looking at the constituents of Mare Nostrum v Seaforce, it is a blatant attempt by Jotun to get "Yacht" owners to pay more for an inferior product.

Interesting as I find that as long as you have MCA coding you can buy it is an insult to most yachtsmen as I for one after 55 years of having various boats might just have got the hang of applying antifoul including the H & S bit.

Like many we are not all rich yachtsmen because we have a boat nor are we stupid and we will march with our feet and SML's/Jotun's turnover in antifoul will decline I think very rapidly.

Fox's Boatyard tried to buy some to apply on my boat but they were refused supply because they were a marina! Have had to go with Mare Nostrum.
 
AFAICS from the MSDS's, Seaforce and Seaqueen contain active biocides, Mare Nostrum is just copper, like Flag etc. (OK copper is a biocide of sorts but you know what I mean!)

Mare Nostrum did not do well in a test last year - was it YM or PBO? - and it's not price attractive.

I think it will be a case of paying up for Micron Something. Ouch!

Don't blame SML, I think this Jotun manoeuvre has hit them hard too.

Yes, it is the vessel which has to be commercially registered. This is nothing to do with H&S in the application of the product.

I agree. SML were quite embarrassed by the rigmarole they had to go through to meet Jotun's profiteering supply policy.
 
I can't add any sort of solution to this problem but can add to the argument. I lifted my Sadler out in November after two years in the water having applied Seaqueen in early 2013 after getting the hull slurry cleaned. Other than a bit of slime the hull was spotless and the finish still looking good. I have bitten the bullet and bought Micron but am far from happy. I really thought I had found a workable, economic solution. Grrr!

No, it is definitely nothing to do with application. You have to show it is for use on a commercial vessel. The evidence required is a coding certificate or equivalent.
 
Another hacked off Sequeen/Seaforce user here. So - moving away slightly, if we are stuck with conventional antifouls - what's the best value? Also I have enough Seaqueen for one coat on my boat - would the forumites put the Seaqueen on first and topcoat with something else or the other way round?

I too have enough for 1 coat as i only used 1 coat last year, it has worked well.I will only do 1 coat this year

Hi Stuart

I have been talking at some length with both SML Marine Paints and Bayside Marine (both Jotun agents) about what is actually in Mare Nostrum and basically it is not as strong as the old Seaqueen and you gets what you pay for being a budget antifoul.

However after much discussion the one I will go for although much dearer but still cheaper than many is Jotun None Stop which you can buy and the specification is much higher and I have decided thats the one I will try when I lift out in the coming months, however I will put it ontop of a Primer as I did before when I apply any antifoul.
