Where did you find the Model number. I have what is probably the same engine badged as an Evinrude but cannot find a model number on it.

Cheers

Neale it's on a small brass plate attached below the engine proper ( sorry I am not familiar with the terms for outboards) on the casting used for clamping the outboard. It is rather exposed and may have been knocked off - it is rivited in place so you would have some empty holes if it were missing.

You seem to have had better luck than I did. My engine was 1999 model and my son got a rope round the prop at high revs. the shear pin was still in one piece but the splines on the cranckshaft and the drive shaft are blown away. the cranckshaft costs £295.00 and the drive shaft £65.00 then add the 'small' parts and labour and you come out with the price of a larger engine. The original cost new was £500.00 the Insurance are paying out £310.00 as the current second hand price. What are shearpins supposed to do?

To find the year, look at the Model No. they go by the code, introduces
I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0, your No. J4BRLCRM is 1984, here's how it works, drop the last letter,(m), the last 2 letters are, C R, look at the code, and you will see that under C is #8, under R, is#4, thus 84 would be the year, I do not know what brilliant person came up with that idea, but take into consideration this is the USA.
