Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me I have just bought an old boat with a Johnson 25 hp, I have found the model and serial numbers but I have tried everywhere to find out how old it is but to no avail, the numbers are model no: 25BA78D I believe it's a D on the end but it might be a 0 and the serial no: B18035, I hope some one out there can help

Gets even better than that ! (I know the link previous shows this ... but thought might be idea to type it out anyway ...)

From 1980 ... the model year is coded The last two letters of the model code indicate the model year. To determine the year .... 1980 onwards of course .... write the word INTRODUCES. Below the letters of the word write the numbers 1 .. 2 .. 3 etc finishing with 0. Match the two letters to these and you get the year ... ie : J25TELCT is a 1983 model where C=8 and T=3.

The rest gives : 25HP and the J ... TEL indicates whether any modifications / special parts used etc. and is important when ordering replacement parts to give whole Model ID to shop.

You will find the official list of model numbers at http://shop.evinrude.com/media/document/ModelNumberReference.pdf
which shows your engine to be a 1978 model

You will find the official parts lists and exploded diagrams here http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E&s1=330c27ca-8e0a-4222-86ad-ccd524461282

This (Seloc) service manual should cover you engine Boatinfo - 1971-1989 Evinrude Service manual

Always quote the full model number when ordering spares. I suspect your engine was made in Belgium and may be slightly different to the models listed on the American sites

The D is a suffix which may denote some mid year changes
